About the Match

The Pakistan Super League 2018 is well underway and we have two teams still looking for their first win competing in this match. The Quetta Gladiators will be taking on the Lahore Qalandars as both teams try and kickstart their campaign. Quetta lost convincingly to Karachi in their first match while Lahore was routed by the Multan Sultans. Which one of these two teams will begin the climb up the table in this match?

Match Preview

Quetta Gladiators

The first match confirmed some lingering fears that fans have about Quetta this season. The main pillars of the Quetta Gladiators success have been their batsmen but Kevin Pietersen is on his last legs, Rilee Rossouw vulnerable to quality spin, and Sarfaraz Ahmed continues to bat too low for our liking.

The Quetta Gladiators actually started quite well against the Karachi Kings and restricted them only 149 with the bat. Shane Watson picked three wickets, Anwar Ali and Jofra Archer picked two each, while Rahat Ali picked one as well.

The bowling was very consistent and constantly asked questions of the opposition. With a general tendency to falter against fast, short-pitched, bowling visible in the Pakistani youngsters we think Jofra Archer will only grow as a threat in this competition.

Among other positives for Quetta from the last match was the performance of Mohammad Nawaz and Umar Amin. Neither of the two players was able to make a decisive contribution but did get some useful runs to lend respectability to the total.

In our opinion, the mainstay of the batting for the Gladiators has to be Shane Watson. Not only is the Australian all-rounder among the best T20 batsmen in the world, he has also tasted incredible success in India on surfaces that are similar.

He is strong against spin, has the ability to clear the boundaries with ease, and is coming off an excellent Big Bash season. We have also noted that his batting and bowling form seems to run in tandem.

If the Gladiators can reshuffle their batting order a little and get their best batsmen to face as many balls as possible while recognizing that some of their past performers may be past their prime then we think the Gladiators have the bowling to be competing for the title.

Quetta Gladiators Starting Lineup

Asad Shafiq, SR Watson, Umar Amin, KP Pietersen, RR Rossouw, Sarfraz Ahmed, Mohammad Nawaz, Hassan Khan, A Ali, Jofra Chioke Archer, Rahat Ali.

Lahore Qalandars

The manner in which the Lahore Qalandars came unstuck during their chase will make their fans very nervous. To slip from 132 for 3  in the 15th over to 136 all out in the 18th over is an absolute disaster. The kind of batting lineup that the Lahore team has, though, this sort of collapse should not be happening too often.

Fakhar Zaman and Sunil Narine provided an energetic start to the inning and even though Brendon McCullum failed in this match, he is a real threat to walk in at 3. The Qalalndars also have Cameron Delport to help steady the ship and provide the late order assault as needed.

The batting order looks sound even though the strategy backfired completely in the first match. More of a concern than their batting will be the inability of their bowlers to pick wickets or build pressure on the opposition batsmen.

Yasir Shah, Sunil Narine, and Mustafizur Rahman make up an excellent trio of bowlers but the remaining overs will be a concern. The highly rated Shaheen Shah Afridi failed to make an impact in the first game and will be under pressure to love up to the hype.

This is a bowling lineup that requires some runs behind it or will be at its best when the opposition is trying to attack. A slow start to the tournament is not ideal but we have confidence in the ability of this bowling attack to fight back.

There is plenty of potential in the Lahore Qalandars lineup and the leadership of Brendon McCullum will surely play a massive role. He is an aggressive captain and needs to back his instincts to get the best out of his team.

Lahore Qalandars Starting Lineup

Brendon McCullum, Raza Hasan, Gulraiz Sadaf, Mustafizur Rahman, Yasir Shah, Shaheen Afridi, Sohail Akhtar, C Delport, Umar Akmal, SP Narine, F Zaman.

Pitch and Conditions

A cloudy day with a slight possibility of rain has been forecast for the match. In all likelihood, this means that the temperatures will be a little more bearable for the players but humidity is likely to be higher. The pitch in Dubai has been pleasantly different from what was expected. There has been a decent amount of bounce on offer and the batsmen have been able to play their shots as well. The pace off the pitch is still slow, though, and so getting your eye in before going big is necessary.

We think a high scoring match is likely to play out.

Our Prediction

The Quetta Gladiators have beaten the Lahore Qalandars in the last three matches that they have played. They need Shane Watson to fire for them otherwise we are afraid this winning streak could come to an end in this match.

We are backing the Lahore Qalandars to win this match and placing faith in Brendon McCullum’s leadership abilities.
