The Quetta Gladiators got over the line against a strong Islamabad United side in the opening match of PSL 5. The defending champions were dealt a blow when Umar Akmal was banned from the tournament until the completion of an inquiry by the anti-corruption unit.
They are now going to be playing against Peshawar Zalmi who narrowly lost their opening match of PSL 2020 to the Karachi Kings. It appears as if the competition between the teams is going to be very close and the conditions in Pakistan are making the impact of the local players a lot more as well.
Can Quetta Gladiators make it two from two or will Peshawar Zalmi bounce back with a win?
Quetta Gladiators vs Peshawar Zalmi PSL 2020 is going to be played at the National Stadium, Karachi on the 22nd of February 2020.
Quetta Gladiators were in a tough spot against Islamabad United before one of their more contentious picks for PSL 5 proved to be the difference. We are talking about Azam Khan, son of Moin Khan (also the coach of the Quetta Gladiators), who top-scored with 59 runs to his name.
His runs came at a blistering 178.79 strike rate and included three hits over the boundary. Senior players like Jason Roy, Shane Watson, and Ahmed Shehzad were all dismissed cheaply and would like to make amends.
We are very hopeful of seeing something special from Jason Roy in PSL 2020. The flat batting wicket at the National Stadium will be to his liking and he could get stuck into the Peshawar Zalmi bowling attack.
On paper, the Quetta Gladiators have a long batting unit but the majority of the runs have to come from the top-order. We don’t think the lower order will be able to save it every time.
Mohammad Hasnain was the standout bowler for Quetta Gladiators. He took four wickets and was able to deliver every time the captain called him. It was the efforts of Mohammad Hasnain, Sohail Khan, and Ben Cutting that kept Islamabad to a gettable total in the previous match.
JJ Roy, SR Watson, Ahmed Shehzad, Sarfraz Ahmed, Azam Khan, Mohammad Nawaz, Fawad Ahmed, Sohail Khan, Ahsan Ali, TS Mills, Mohammad Hasnain.
Peshawar Zalmi started PSL 2020 with a ten-run loss to the Karachi Kings. The scoreline actually looks a lot closer than the match felt because Peshawar Zalmi was always hanging on by a thread and never ahead of the game.
The bowling for Peshawar Zalmi was very poor. Hasan Ali went for over 50 runs in his four overs and the other bowlers were not much better. Not a single bowler in the entire team went for less than 8.25 runs an over.
We had mentioned the risk of picking players that were out of form and in a downward trajectory in their careers and that is something that Peshawar Zalmi will have to deal with for the entirety of the tournament.
Wahab Riaz was perhaps the best of the lot. He is one bowler to watch out for in the upcoming match.
Kamran Akmal and Liam Livingstone were the best batsmen for Peshawar Zalmi in the previous match. Kamran Akmal is astonishingly consistent in the PSL and started PSL 5 quite strongly as well. Liam Livingstone showcased his brilliant hitting ability and kept Peshawar Zalmi in the game.
Darren Sammy made a quick 30 as well but we really question making him the captain of the team when that spot could be better served by other overseas players. Tom Banton was not very comfortable at the top of the order and overall the batting seems a bit underwhelming.
If Kamran Akmal fails at the top then the wheels could really come off for Peshawar Zalmi.
Kamran Akmal, Tom Banton, Haider Ali, Liam Livingstone, Shoaib Malik, LA Dawson, DJG Sammy, Wahab Riaz, Hasan Ali, Aamir Khan, Rahat Ali.
The team that wins the toss is going to want to bat first.

The weather in Karachi has been excellent so far and it is expected to continue in the same manner. This match is going to be played in the afternoon where the ball may not come on to the bat as well as during the evening game.
Overall, though, we have seen enough evidence that the National Stadium has prepared an excellent track for batting. Another match where the par score is around 180 looks to be in store.

We are not convinced about the team balance of Peshawar Zalmi as it is currently set up. The bowlers are out of form and the batting looks vulnerable. Quetta Gladiators managed to win the previous match without any of their top players performing. They could get better in this upcoming contest.
Bet on Quetta Gladiators to win.
