It’s Sheffield Shield time again! This means Australia’s states battle it out for the right to be called the best in the country.
In this Test match format, Queensland is taking on Tasmania in both teams’ first campaign of the new season.
This should prove interesting, as Queensland has Australia’s better batsmen in the form of Marnus Labuschagne and Usman Khawaja. However, Tasmania is on the rise and did defeat Queensland by an innings and 231 runs in the last matchup.
Queensland were the winners of the 2020/21 Sheffield Shield, but went out of the 21/22 campaign rather meekly. They’ll be looking to bounce back and prove they’re the superior state.
Fast bowler Billy Stanlake is out, but Queensland did pick up Liam Guthrie, who has been performing consistently for the Brisbane Heat.
As the team’s last contest was a thrashing by Tasmania, there’s no doubt going to be extra nerves heading into this rematch for the Sheffield Shield.
Keep an eye on wicketkeeper/batter Jimmy Peirson, who picked up four Test hundreds in the last two years. Still, most of the attention will be on Labuschagne (BT.Avg 69.90) and Khawaja (BT.Avg 55.20), who have become big names in Australia’s Test squad, especially in the last Ashes series.
Jack Clayton, Gurinder Sandhu, James Bazley, Joe Burns, Jimmy Peirson, Marnus Labuschagne, Matt Renshaw, Matt Kuhnemann, Michael Neser, Mark Steketee, Usman Khawaja.
It’s been some time since Tasmania hoisted the Sheffield Shield trophy, 2010/11 to be precise, but this is a feisty, talented side that refuses to give in at any point.
Although Tasmania lost recent matches to NSW and Victoria, these were incredibly close defeats and were by no means a drubbing. Plus, Tassie has got to feel good after crushing Queensland in the two states’ last meeting.
This win featured a masterful performance by bowler Sam Rainbird, who picked up 8 wickets for 21 runs in the first innings, and 5 wickets for 21 runs in the second. Queensland’s batters will be nervous when Rainbird starts his first over with the ball.
If Tasmania can win again over Queensland, despite the match being played in Brisbane (far from Tasmania’s comfort zone), then it will be down to the solid batting combo of Tim Ward and Caleb Jewell.
Of course, captain Jordan Silk has impressed with the bat, too, scoring 606 runs in nine matches with a batting average of 46.62. Silk is right in his prime and if he can earn a century against Queensland, then Tasmania has a strong chance to win.
Tasmania’s bowling will need to prove its worth, as even though Rainbird and Peter Siddle are reliable, others have let down the side. Still, there’s enough confidence in Tassie’s upper-order bowling attack to quell any fears for the team.

Most teams opt to bowl first after winning the coin toss, as the conditions improve for batting later in the competition.

The pitch at the Allan Border Field, Brisbane, is typically very balanced and runs often go into the high 200s. Some rain is predicted for the start of the day, but should clear out and remain a cloudy 20°C.
It’s hard to ignore the strength of Queensland, especially when you see names like Labuschagne and Khawaja in the side. But even though QL is the favourite on their home pitch, Tasmania is a good bet as the side is plucky and full of confidence, not to mention talented batters.
Bet on Tasmania to win.
