About the Match
With 14 points on board, CSK has slipped to the 2nd position after being overtaken by KKR; they will go up against Rajasthan Royals, who are down to the third place with 14 points, on 10th May at Chennai. The hosts lost their last match against Mumbai Indians by 6 wickets and will be eager to cover some lost ground with a victory here; the Royals on the other hand lost to Sunrisers in the by a narrow margin of 7 runs and will be looking forward to win matches and climb up the ladder. The contest on Sunday will test the teams for their experience in handling critical situations on the field; the side that can dominate the other right from the beginning will be better placed to emerge victorious.
They failed to chase a tall target of 201 runs against Sunrisers Hyderabad in the last game with players like Watson, Hooda and Nair failing to fire with the bat. Steven Smith was brilliant as he posted 68 off 40 to build the innings but didn’t find an able partner down the order. Chris Morris’ heroic 34 off 11 provided some impetus to take the total to 194 but they fell short by 7 runs; the bowlers had earlier filed to restrict the opponents from posting a humungous total. While Tambe and Faulkner took a wicket each and Watson helped with 2-36, too many runs were given away and the batsmen failed to deliver under pressure. However, their match against Daredevils yielded victory by 14 runs after successfully defending 189 runs, thanks to Kulkarni, Binny and Faulkner who took 2 wickets each. Ajinkya Rahane has been performing well and his unbeaten 91 off 54 earned him player of the match award against the Dredevils; Karun Nair has contributed well along with the likes of Watson, Faulkner and Smith. Although they suffered a loss in the last game, they are prepared to take on CSK in the upcoming match and progress further ahead in their campaign.
Chennai Super Kings
The innings against Mumbai exposed certain weaknesses in the batting line-up as CSK were able to post only 158 runs against a rejuvenated team; the openers contributed just 20+ runs each while players like Raina and Faf du Plessis struggled to keep the scoreboard ticking. Dhoni and Negi tried to revive the innings with a 54-run stand for the 5th wicket but it wasn’t enough for the bowlers to defend. Although Ashwin claimed 2-17 and Bravo dismissed Sharma, they couldn't stop Mumbai from winning the match easily. In the previous contest against RCB, the team had emerged victorious after defending 148 runs set up by the middle order batsmen like Raina, Plessis and Dhoni. Nehra had been stupendous with the ball as he claimed 3-19 while Bravo and Pandey took 2 wickets each to demolish the opponents. They have been consistent throughout the tournament with brilliant performances in all departments of the game; their defeat against Mumbai would have surely hurt their morale but the team knows very well how to bounce back and challenge other sides.
While both teams suffered defeat in their previous games, they are hungry for a win here and will come out all guns blazing on Sunday. The contest will be well-fought and although CSK has the home advantage, we feel that the Royals will bounce back with a much-needed win here.
