About the Match
The tournament is crossing the half way of the league stage and Rajasthan Royals are sitting pretty with 10 points from 7 matches whereas the Sunrisers have played one match less but far behind with 4 points and a negative NRR. The two teams come face to face in the 30th contest of IPL 2014 on 8th May at Ahmedabad; the previous contest between them was about 3 weeks back at Abu Dhabi, which resulted in a comfortable win for the Royals with 4 wickets and 3 balls to spare. The scenario is different now, with the match being played at Ahmedabad and the Sunrisers needing to raise their level of the game to overcome the determined Royals.
They played the last match against Kolkata Knight Riders in the same venue just 3 days before and established a very healthy 170 runs from a spirited top order contribution; later, Watson and Tambe destroyed the KKR batting line up reducing them to a total collapse in a matter of couple of overs. Firstly a well-planned attack by Watson followed by a hat-trick by Tambe to thwart the dreams of the Knight Riders; the last over of the match was again bowled by a confident Watson to ensure that the pressure on the opponent did not dilute and they won the game by 10 runs. All the players of the Royals are in a positive frame of mind and the openers, Rahane and Nair have settled to build a good opening partnership for the rest of the batsmen to do the job as per the need of the hour. Their discipline on the ground, determination to take on the opponent irrespective of the reputation and meticulous execution of their plans, allows the team to come good in every situation.
The opening pair has not been consistent except for Finch who has been regularly contributing for the cause of the team; Shikhar Dhawan is yet to find ways to regain his form for a big innings whereas Rahul, Warner and Sammy have been providing possible spine in batting, which has not been sufficient to win matches. They have only 4 points from 6 matches with a negative NRR, which needs a lot of improvement; Bhuvneshwar Kumar is shaping well as a medium pacer and has been regularly among wicket takers against most of the teams and same is the performance by Steyn. Karn Sharma has been doing well with his googlies and the team as a whole has good talents but they haven’t been delivering as a cohesive unit. They need to wake up and come out stronger if they want to go forward with their campaign here.
Sunrisers are sure to rise up to the occasion and will put up a good show to be in the reckoning thus looking good to give a good fight but Rajasthan Royals, who are better equipped and in a better frame of mind, seem to be better placed to win this game.
