About the Match
Rangpur Riders will locks horns with Rajshahi Kings in the 31st game of Bangladesh Premier League 2016. This match will be played in Dhaka at Sher e Bangla National Stadium which will host the second Kings-Riders clash. The two teams met each other in the 25th game of the tournament where Kings emerged victorious by a narrow margin of 12 runs. As far as the points table is concerned, the two teams have a difference of two points which will either become zero or double to four points. If Riders win, they will have 12 points from 9 games and a win for Kings will place them on par with Riders with ten points from 9 matches. Considering that the there are only a few games to go before the playoffs, this is certainly on of the important matches in the tournament.
With so many international stars like Shahid Afridi, Sharjeel Khan and Mohammad Shahzad, it was surprising when Naeem Islam was named as the skipper of the side. Another surprising fact is that youngster Mohammad Mithun has been their best batsman. He has scored 247 runs at a strike rate of a little over 123 in just seven games.
In their most recent game, which was against Chittagong Vikings, they were outclassed in all departments. They scored a total of only 124 runs which was made to look too small by Tamim Iqbal and Chris Gayle. Riders batted first and no batsmen could flourish to score big with Soumya Sarkar being their best batsman scoring 26 off 21 deliveries. Their bowling too was listless as Gayle and Tamim made a mockery of the target. The target of 124 was chased down in just over 16 Overs with only one wicket going down.
So far, their bowling was going well with Shahid Afridi leading the pack, but things could go worse from here if they do not learn from their performance against Vikings. However, if they do, they can once again become a dangerous team to deal with.
The Kings started off slowly in the competition as they lost all three of their first three matches. They've picked up since then and are now with four wins in the tournament. Credit goes to their skipper Darren Sammy who has single-handedly batted them to victory. In the game against Rangpur Rider he smashed 44 off 18 balls and against Khulna Titans, he scored lightning quick 71 coming off just 34 deliveries.
Sabbir Rahman and Samit Patel looked good in their most recent match against Khulna Titans. They have a strong batting lineup with Mominul Haque, Junaid Siddique and Umar Akmal in the order. Young Bangladeshi spinner Mehedi Hasan along with Nazmul Islam and Mohammad Sami form the backbone of bowling department. They have few more options as well, thanks to the presence of all-rounders like Samit Patel and Darren Sami. Overall, they have a strong team which appears to be clicking at the right moment.
In the last two games, Darren Sammy has been the hero for Rajshahi's victory. Rangpur, on the other hand, has lost the plot and are on a losing streak. Rajshahi is climbing the ladder steadily and another victory will take them on par with the Rangpur Riders. They've beaten the Riders before in the tournament and with the momentum they have, they are set to do it once again.
