About the Match
Supergiants and Royal Challengers, teams which have had similar fortunes till now winning their opening games but being unable to repeat the feat yet, will face off in the upcoming game at Pune on 22nd April. While Supergiants were defeated by Kings XI and Gujarat Lions, Royal Challengers failed to conquer Mumbai Indians and Delhi Daredevils. Both sides have only 2 points each and will fight hard to make a comeback here; it needs to be seen which of them flourishes on the field with bat and ball to climb up the table.
Rising Pune Supergiants
Batting first against Kings XI, they accumulated 152 runs on board thanks to a superb effort by Faf du Plessis, who scored 67 off 53 to set the foundation; Steve Smith posted a well-made 38 but the others including Pietersen, Dhoni, Rahane and Thisara Perera couldn’t contribute much with the bat. Defending the total, the bowlers couldn’t find a breakthrough till the 13th over; Ankit Sharma dismissed Vohra and Murugan Ashwin claimed 3-36 later but it was too late to change the outcome, losing the match by 6 wickets.
Against Gujarat Lions too, they batted first and put up 163 runs but the bowlers yet again failed to make an impact, leading to a loss by 7 wickets. Rahane, Faf du Plessis and Pietersen combined well to build the foundation while Dhoni contributed with a quick fire 22 off 10 balls. Murugan Ashwin and Ishant Sharma took 3 wickets between them but the others like RP Singh, Ravichandran Ashwin, Bhatia and Mitchell Marsh gave away too many runs in the end.
Overall, they are a strong side as proven in their win against Mumbai Indians in the opener but they need to regroup and come back with a better strategy against the hard-hitting RCB team.
Royal Challengers Bangalore
Kohli promoted himself up the order against hosts Mumbai Indians and did well to build the foundation along with AB de Villiers after Rahul’s dismissal; however, they couldn’t come out all guns blazing and fell in quick succession in the 11th over. Travis Head and Sarfaraz Khan then posted a 63-run partnership for the 5th wicket to take the scoreboard to a competitive 170. The bowlers however, gave away too many runs and despite a splendid 3-40 by Iqbal Abdulla and Richardson claiming the wicket of Parthiv Patel in the 2nd over, they couldn’t restrict the opponents thereby losing the match by 6 wickets.
In their opening match against Sunrisers, they had registered a thumping win at home after posting a humungous total of 227 on board batting first; while Kohli scored 75 off 51, AB de Villiers posted a brilliant 82 from just 42 deliveries. Useful contributions were also made by Watson and Sarfaraz; the bowlers then cracked a whip on the opposition as Watson and Chahal took 2 wickets each and Pervez Rasool and Milne took 2 wickets between them.
They have a strong batting line-up and a good mix of spin and pace in their bowling department; although they have lost their last two games, they have the resources to make a comeback here.
Though both teams haven’t had success in recent outings, they are equally matched to pull off a win here; the contest would be well fought by the batsmen and we fell that whichever team comes up with quick breakthroughs with the ball, will be better placed to emerge victorious. Looking at the batting form, we think despite multiple failures, RCB is better placed to emerge on top in this game
