About the Match
Rising Pune Supergiant finally managed to register their second win of the competition against RCB and will now take on a much tougher opponent, the Sunrisers Hyderabad. The defending champions of the IPL will enter this match on the back a fantastic victory against the Delhi Daredevils and look to cement their place in the top half of the table.
Rising Pune Supergiant
It still bewilders as to how a team that has the best batsman in the world, the best all-rounder in the world and the best leg spinner in the world, along with some top Indian talent can struggle to win matches.
However, there is still plenty of time for RPS to reverse its fortunes and a win here could see them jump into a clear 5th
place on the points table. For that to happen though, we believe that Pune will need its top players to start firing more consistently.
Ajinkya Rahane has not lived up to his reputation and been unable to carry on after getting starts. He has a decent opening partner in Rahul Tripathi but one does not expect him to get too many big runs in this tournament.
For Pune to consistently get big totals or chase down opposition targets, Rahane, Smith and Ben Stokes need to face the maximum deliveries. Dhoni is an IPL legend but has struggled to get going off late and we have a sneaking suspicion that he may be past his best in the shortest format of the game.
The bowling for Pune has one clear superstar: Imran Tahir. He has taken twice the number of wickets of any other bowler in the team and needs some support to win matches for RPS.
Ben Stokes has been disappointing and given away a lot of runs in the death overs. RPS will be a different team if Ben Stokes can contribute regularly with the ball. The Indian duo of Shardul Thakur, Jayadev Unadkat can go for some big runs on their off days and that is what Pune will have to guard against.
The Sunrisers would be delighted with the way Kane Williamson opened his IPL 2017 account. He smashed the Delhi bowlers for 89 runs of 51 balls and hit 5 sixes along the way. This performance will ensure his selection for the next couple of matches and provide some much-needed balance to the Sunrisers batting.
We also think that Williamson’s presence will allow David Warner to play with more freedom and be even more dangerous than he is. Shikhar Dhawan has scored runs consistently this season but his strike rate could be better for someone facing the bulk of the bowling in the powerplay overs.
With Moises Henriques in the side as well, this Sunrisers lineup has a very balanced look to it.
The bowling for the Sunrisers has been outstanding this season. Buvaneshwar Kumar has taken more wickets alone than the entire Gujarat Lions team has in its first 5 matches! Rashid Khan is constantly at the batsmen and picking wickets at important intervals and Siddharth Kaul has been good in the two matches he has played as well.
We think that opposition teams have an opportunity to target the other bowlers in this lineup and maybe put the Sunrisers under pressure.
Head To Head
The two teams have played each other two times and the record stands even at 1-1.
This Pune team has the talent to pull off an upset but whether it can get all the players performing together is the big question. We think the Sunrisers Hyderabad will win this match with relative ease.
