RS vs WPR Match Prediction - Dec 23, 2022

The group stage of the ongoing CSA One-Day Challenge has now reached its fag end, as the Boland Rocks take on the Western Provinces in their last league match of the season.

Both teams still stand a chance to face the Lions in the Finals scheduled to be held next week. Seeing the odds on offer from most betting sites, the Western Provinces hold a slight upper hand here. But the recent form of the Rocks means we should have a tight contest on our hands.

RS vs WPR Team Previews

Boland

In stark contrast to the start that the Western Provinces had, the Rocks seemed to be headed towards a disaster after losing its 3 opening matches. However, the team has managed to script a turnaround and now has a real shot at qualifying for the finals.

The Rocks have won each of their last 3 matches, the latest of which was against the North West Dragons. The spinner duo of Imran Manack and Shaun von Berg ran riot at the Boland Park, picking up 6 wickets between them, and helped bowl out the Dragons for a mere 138.

Chasing the modest total, the Rocks lost 3 wickets for 48 runs but an unbeaten 91-run partnership between Michael Copeland and Clyde Fortuin helped see them through. Von Berg has proved to be a decent all-rounder for the Rocks, as he has scored 186 runs and has also picked up 6 wickets so far. Janneman Malan has been excellent at the top of the order throughout the series, while Ferisco Adams has played a couple of good winnings lower down.

The bowling however is a weak link for the Rocks, as none of the bowlers, except Hardus Viljoen, have bowled consistently.

Western Province

The Western Provinces had the best possible start to the season as they won each of their first 4 matches. At that stage, the team was cruising along and looked certain to book a spot in the finals. However, they have started sputtering in the last couple of matches and will now have to win this match to survive.

Tony de Zorzi has by far been the best batsman for the Western Provinces this season. In 6 innings, he has scored 265 runs at an average of 53.00. His innings included a century and a half-century. He has received good support from his opening partner, Jonathan Bird and together the two have provided the team with many good starts.

However, they have looked a bit out of form in the last couple of matches and that has been one of the main reasons for the team’s failures in the last couple of weeks. Yaseen Vallie and George Linde have played a couple of good innings but haven’t been consistent enough, while Daniel Smith is having a terrible season.

Linde, however, is having an excellent time with the ball and is the leading wicket-taker in the team with 11 wickets. Tshepo Moreki is close behind with 10 wickets, while Nandre Burger and Junaid Dawood too have chipped in with regular wickets.

Pitch and Conditions

The pitch at Boland Park is good to bat on, and the batsmen will find it easy to play shots here. While the seamers are likely to struggle here, the spinners will be quite effective here as the pitch tends to slow down a bit. The average first innings score here is around 250 and can be considered to be a par score.

The skies are likely to remain overcast through the day but there is a little chance of rain. The temperature is likely to remain between 20-25 degrees Celsius.

RS vs WPR Betting Tips

Both teams have been far from perfect this season and that is why they are facing a must-win scenario to make it into the finals. While the odds are suggesting a win for the Western Provinces, we are backing the underdogs here. The Rocks have bounced back well in the last couple of weeks and are likely to continue with the winning momentum.

Daniel Smith has endured a tough time this season. In his 6 innings so far, he has scored just 76 runs at an average of just 12.66. He has scored the 21-run mark just twice this season and has a top score of just 28 runs. Given his poor run of form, the only way to bet here is Under.
