These are still early days in the ICC Under-19 Cricket World but things are already looking pretty interesting. India and Ireland got off to a pretty good start in Group B and that has made things a little difficult for South Africa. They would now need to win both of their remaining matches, making their upcoming match of high significance.
Up next in the tournament, South Africa Under 19 are set to take on Uganda Under 19 in what will be an important match for both these sides. The match is to be played on Tuesday, 18th November 2022 at Queen's Park Oval, Port of Spain, Trinidad.
South Africa U-19 were one of the favorites to qualify for the next round and they still are but having lost their opening match to India, they can no longer afford any slip-ups. Another loss in any of their two remaining matches will put their qualification in jeopardy, which is the last thing they would want. Primarily for that reason, they would be under tremendous pressure to do well in this upcoming match.
As it currently stands on the ladder, they are placed at the bottom in their group with zero points and a terrible net run rate of -0.900. A win here will push them back into the contention and that is exactly what they will be hoping for.
Even though South Africa were always the underdogs in their match against India, the match that they lost, they would be a bit disappointed following that loss. Having restricted India to a subpar total, they were in business for the most part of the match, only to bottle it in the second half of their innings. They were excellent with the new ball in the first innings and their batting against the quicker bowlers was almost flawless. Handling spinners is something that they would want to get better at before they get into the knockouts, which we believe they will.
On paper, South Africa U-19 have a decent unit with an immaculately balanced bowling attack. Also, with the likes of Dewald Brevis, George van Heerden, and Valentine Kitime doing good, they have a solid base. They would need the other batsmen, especially the lower middle-order players to step-up in the upcoming match and if that happens, they would be in for a really big win.
Valentine Kitime, Ethan John Cunningham, Dewald Brevis, George Van Heerden, Kaden Solomon, Andile Simelane, Matthew Boast, Mickey Copeland, Liam Alder, Aphiwe Mnyanda, Kwena Maphaka.
Uganda U-19 are one of the newest teams to feature in an ICC event and they certainly earn their place with a terrific show in the qualifiers. While they have a very capable side, they were never the favorites to make it out of the Group stage. However, they fought pretty well against the Irish team and might well be fancying their chances against the Protean unit that might be running a bit low on confidence.
One thing that works to Uganda's advantage is that they have nothing to lose and no baggage from the past carried into the tournament. Any win or even a fighting performance will only add to their experience, which might come in handy in growing their stature in international cricket, regardless of the level. As it currently stands on the points table, Uganda U-19 are placed third with zero points and a net run rate of -0.750. A win here might not change their position on the ladder but will open the gates for them.
Chasing a total of 239 in their last match, which was against Ireland, Uganda did impress one and all as they came within the touching distance of a win. They did a terrific job of keeping Ireland to an under par total before going about their business in the chase. They looked down and out at one stage with 6 down for 97, but a couple of brilliant partnerships pushed them well within the reach before they lost the match by 39 runs. Pascal Murungi and Juma Miyaji were their standout players with the bat, scoring 63 and 38 respectively.
All in all, Uganda certainly have the capability available to upset any side on their day. However, they are prone to cracking under pressure and that is something that they will need to be better at going forward. They would need to be at their best in the upcoming match and if they are, they will be in with a chance to post a surprise win over the Proteas.
Ronald Omara, Isaac Ategeka, Brian Asaba, Pascal Murungi, Cyrus Kakuru, Juma Miyaji, Joseph Baguma, Edwin Nuwagaba, Matthew Musinguzi, Fahad Mutagana, Yunusu Sowobi.
Even though the surface is unlikely to change a lot over the course of hundred overs, batting second could be a challenge if there's a mountain of a total to climb. We saw that happen in the previous match and with the nature of the surface it is, it might well be the case here in this match as well. For that reason, the captain winning the toss is expected to bat first here.

Port of Spain is one of the very few venues in the Caribbean that tends to stay true throughout the course of the match. Also, with relatively shorter boundaries and even pace, batsmen enjoy their time here. In the first match here, we saw Zimbabwe score a mammoth total and expect something similar here in this match as well. Only thing is that the spinners might have a bit more assistance available from the surface. The weather is likely to be bright and sunny, making it an excellent day for cricket. Given the surface that is expected to be on offer and what we have seen, a total of 270 would be about par here.

This is an important match that may seem to be a bit skewed in favor of Proteas, but Uganda is certainly not the team to be taken lightly. Having said that, South Africa are a far better side between the two, on all accounts. Also, Uganda seem to be a bit too over-reliant on only a couple of players in each department. Considering that and the other factors stated above, betting on a South Africa U-19 win should be the way to go here.
South Africa U-19 were in the hunt for a good part of their chase and the primary reason for that was the application that Brevis showed. Also known as Baby AB, Brevis is an excellent batsmen of pace as well as spin and will be difficult to get past. He is certainly the prime candidate to bet upon as the best batsman of the day for the Proteas.
The top-order vulnerabilities with Uganda U-19 were exposed well by the Irish bowlers and the South African bowlers are likely to take a cue from that. South Africa's top-order, on the other hand, looks a much better batting team, at least at the top. For those reasons, we expect South Africa U-19 to get off to a better start than their counterparts and betting on them to have a higher total at the end of the first 15 overs is the way to go.
