England and South Africa have proven to be much closer matched in white-ball cricket than they were in the test format. That is something to be expected as South Africa is in a rebuilding phase right now and any differences will show up more starkly in the longest format of the game.
This actually means that we can expect the T20 matches between South Africa and England to be very competitive as well. The ODI matches were completely without context but that is not the case now. The T20 World Cup 2020 is around the corner and teams are looking to make use of every match they play in this format.
England will have dreams of adding to its World Cup collection while South Africa will hope to erase the painful memories of 2019. Which team is going to start faster out of the blocks?
South Africa vs England 1st T20 2020 is going to be played at Buffalo Park, East London, on the 12th of February 2020.
The core of the South African team remains exactly the same in white-ball cricket and so the players are going to come into the T20’s with a bit of confidence. South Africa beat England comfortably in one match and ran it close in the one it lost.
Quinton de Kock is not one to take a step back and will come at England with a lot of aggression from the start. He is also going to lead the batting unit alongside Reeza Hendricks, Temba Bavuma, Rassie van der Dussen, David Miller, and JJ Smuts.
This is the same bunch of players that got the first chance to cement their place in the 50 over format and we expect to see them in the 20 over format too.
South Africa also has to choose between Andile Phehlukwayo and Dwaine Pretorius for the second all-rounder’s role. With JJ Smuts in the side, it is likely that South Africa will pick just one out of its two senior all-rounders and we think Phehlukwayo is going to be that player.
Dale Steyn returns to the side after a long layoff and is going to slot straight into the starting eleven. Steyn had a decent outing in the Big Bash for the Melbourne Stars and has publicly stated his intention of playing the T20 World Cup.
South Africa is going to benefit from his experience for sure. Tabraiz Shamsi is a sure starter alongside possibly Beuran Hendricks. This lineup gives de Kock a lot of different bowling options, something that he enjoys having.
The South African squad is a strong one but it is a bit lacking in terms of batting power and death bowling capabilities.
Quinton de Kock, Temba Bavuma, RVD Dussen, JJT Smuts, David Miller, Dwaine Pretorius, Andile Phehlukwayo, B Hendricks, Tabraiz Shamsi, DW Steyn, Lungi Ngidi.
Eoin Morgan would have shifted his focus from ODI cricket to T20 cricket the moment England lifted the ODI World Cup. He has the team to mount a serious challenge for the T20 World Cup once more and this series is as good an opportunity to start testing out his players.
England is loaded with all-rounders and players that can strike the ball big. Eoin Morgan, Jason Roy, Dawid Malan, Jonny Bairstow, Jos Buttler, Ben Stokes, and Moeen Ali are expected to be the top-7 for England in this first match.
The batting order is a bit fluid but every single player in this list is a proven match-winner in T20 cricket around the world. It is also not as if the batting ends with this lot. Tom Curran, Adil Rashid, Chris Jordan, and Mark Wood make a compelling lower-order as well with almost everyone capable of getting a few crucial runs if needed.
This is a serious T20 side with plenty of options to adapt to the conditions and the opposition.
Eoin Morgan is going to instruct his team to play with freedom and set the template for the match early on. There is an excess of resources when it comes to 20 over cricket and so England can afford to be extravagant from the start.
We are very keen to how Jason Roy performs in this series because he tends to enjoy the hard and bouncy surfaces expected in South Africa. He is our pick to be the leading batsman of the series alongside Eoin Morgan.
JJ Roy, Jos Buttler, Jonny Bairstow, Eoin Morgan, BA Stokes, Joe Denly, Moeen Ali, Tom Curran, AU Rashid, Chris Jordan, M Wood.
The team that wins the toss is going to want to field first as is the norm in T20 cricket around the world.

The weather forecast for match day in East London is excellent. There is very little chance of rain predicted although a few clouds may be around. The pitch at Buffalo Park is pretty good for batting. We have seen domestic White Ball matches being played across South Africa and found them to be uniformly in favor of the batsmen.
The spinners, particularly wrist-spinners, have had success in picking wickets and keeping the runs scoring in check. This makes Adil Rashid and Tabraiz Shamsi very crucial to the outcome of the match.

These are two very good teams playing against each other but make no mistake, England is at a whole different level. T20 cricket is unpredictable because a single player can change the nature of the match and there are match winners on both sides. Overall, though, England has a better team than South Africa in every aspect of the game. We think England is going to be very motivated for the T20 matches as well.
