Pakistan won the ODI series against South Africa 2-1 in what was a closely contested series. South Africa was considerably weaker for the decider but that is not something that Pakistan can do anything about. Now, the action shifts to the T20 series which is even more important considering the upcoming T20 World Cup 2021 in just a few months.
Pakistan is riding high on the success of its ODI format and will go in as the favorite once more. South Africa will be without many of its best T20 players but still has the bench strength to be able to give Pakistan a tough fight.
South Africa vs Pakistan 1st T20 2021 is going to be played at the Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg on the 10th of April 2021.
It is a real shame that South Africa is playing an international series and its best players have chosen not to represent it. That is the reality of the times we live in and we are not going to delve further into the missing names.
The batting lineup for South Africa is going to be led by Reeza Hendricks and Janneman Malan at the top of the order. Hendricks was prolific in this form of the game not too long back and Malan has been very impressive in every opportunity that he has got.
Rassie van der Dussen should come in at number three followed by Temba Bavuma. Heinrich Klassen, Wihaan Lubbe, and Dwaine Pretorius are expected to find a place in the lineup as well. This is not a weak batting lineup but it is certainly not the strongest either.
The inexperience and lack of power in the lower order could be an issue.
Among the bowlers, Tabraiz Shamsi is the highest-ranked T20 bowler and can be expected to give South Africa a wicket-taking edge. He does not have the best record against Pakistan, though. Bjorn Fortuin, Beuran Hendricks, and Lutho Sipamla are the other bowlers that will almost certainly be playing.
The bowling attack is not great ad we have just seen Pakistan demolish these bowlers with ease in the third ODI.
Heinrich Klaasen, PJ van Biljon, Aiden Markram, Janneman Malan, Andile Phehlukwayo, George Linde, Wihan Lubbe, Tabraiz Shamsi, B Hendricks, SSB Magala, Lizaad Williams.
Pakistan has made some interesting changes to its T20 team and we think most of them are pretty good. The management has used the truncated PSL as the basis for selection and that is not a bad thing. Players that performed were picked and there seems to be a genuine effort to try and embrace the power-hitting trend that is spreading across the cricketing world.
A strong batting line-up with the likes of Babar Azam, Sharjeel Khan, Mohammad Hafeez, and Haider Ali likely to comprise the top-4 gives Pakistan a lot to work with. Fakhar Zaman has also joined the squad and could get a game. Babar Azam is at the top of his game and arguably the best batsman in the world right now while Mohammad Hafeez has been absolutely brilliant in the T20 format as well.
Mohammad Rizwan, Sarfaraz Ahmed, Faheem Ashraf, and Mohammad Nawaz are likely to fight for three available spots in the team. We think Nawaz might be the one to miss out if Usman Qadir is picked for his wrist-spin abilities.
Either way, the Pakistani bowling attack is very strong with Haris Rauf, Shaheen Afridi, and possibly Hasan li making the cut for the first match. After Hasan Ali’s heroics with the bat, we think his power-hitting down the order cannot be ignored either.
As well as Pakistan did in the ODI format, the T20 format is where they really shine the most.
Mohammad Rizwan, Babar Azam, Fakhar Zaman, Haider Ali, Mohammad Hafeez, Faheem Ashraf, Mohammad Nawaz, Shaheen Afridi, Hasan Ali, Usman Qadir, Haris Rauf.
The team that wins the toss is likely to want to field first because that is the general trend in T20 cricket but we don’t think there is a great advantage to doing so at Johannesburg. There have been 23 matches played here and 12 have them won by the team batting first.

The weather forecast for Johannesburg is fantastic and there is no rain predicted. The pitches in South Africa have been a bit on the slower side as it is the end of the season but overall we should get a good batting surface for this match.
The Wanderers is a place where the sixes fly off the bat thanks to a good surface, smallish boundaries, and high altitude. A lot of runs are on offer and something around 180-190 should be seen as par batting first.
It is difficult to look past the strengths of the Pakistani team at the moment. They have a strong batting lineup with its top players in great form. The bowling lineup is also better than South Africa at the moment.
