Boxing day is a goldmine for cricket lovers around the world as it is the traditional start of the test match season! South Africa is hosting Sri Lanka this year and we are hoping for a good contest between the two.
Sri Lanka is the only Asian nation to have won a series in South Africa and has always run the home side close. South Africa is battling some injury concerns as well as a long transition period that has weakened its position in the cricketing world.
We could have a perfect storm of things coming together and providing a memorable contest.
South Africa vs Sri Lanka 1st Test 2020 is going to be played at SuperSport Park, Centurion starting on the 26th of December 2020.
There are 17 people in the South African squad for the first test match. A ridiculous high number for a home team but one that takes into account potential availabilities of players down the line. Beuran Hendricks is already a high-profile player missing out because of a presumed COVID-19 infection.
We are very excited to see what this South African team can achieve when it is free of outside distractions. There are some tremendous players to watch out for. Aiden Markram is back in the squad after a long hiatus and we believe he is destined to make it big eventually.
Dean Elgar, Faf du Plessis, Temba Bavuma, and Rassie van der Dussen are the other batsmen that should lead the batting challenge followed by Quinton de Kock and Dwayne Pretorius. The all-rounder’s position is not yet certain.
We think that Pretorius is in the best position to fill it but it could easily go to Wiaan Mulder as well.
Among the bowlers, Glenton Stuurman looks likely to make his debut alongside Lungi Ngidi, Keshav Maharaj, and possibly Anrich Noortje.
There is enough firepower in both the batting and bowling to be able to get the better of the Sri Lankan attack with ease.
Aiden Markram, Dean Elgar, RVD Dussen, Faf du Plessis, Quinton de Kock, Temba Bavuma, Wiaan Mulder, K Maharaj, Anrich Nortje, Lutho Sipamla, Lungi Ngidi.
It took one of the greatest test innings of all time from Kusal Perera to be able to win the match and series against South Africa last time around. Sri Lanka will be hoping that they can perform better as a side and not be in a situation to need another miracle at all.
Led by Dimuth Karunaratne, the challenge for this Sri Lankan team is going to be getting enough runs to compete. Kusal Mendis, Lahiru Thirimanne, Ohhada Fernando, Dhanajaya de SIlva, and possibly Dasun Shanaka may lineup for the first test.
That is a decent batting lineup in familiar conditions but we don’t think they will be able to have a big impact in South African conditions.
The onus is going to be on keeping the new ball out and then pressing ahead as the conditions get easier. The recent success of the Sri Lankans against the South African team may be something that gives the batsmen confidence but we would be wary of reading too much into it.
The bowling for Sri Lanka is always the problem. Kasun Rajitha, Dushmanth Chameera, and Suranga Lakmal seem to be the bowlers to start out with maybe Dilriwan Perera being the lone spinner.
If the conditions are very bowler-friendly, then the Sri Lankan bowlers could pose some problems as they get good movement off the pitch.

Winning the toss and fielding first is the general trend in South Africa, at least for the visiting teams. South Africa too may want to field first so that it can try and blow away the Sri Lankan batting in the first session.
Read our guide on toss predictions to learn how we analyze and come up with our tips.
The conditions are expected to be more moderate than what the Sri Lankans got in their previous tour. South Africa will want flatter tracks where its own batsmen can score runs and its bowlers continue to be able to pick wickets.
By providing a very bowler-friendly track, South Africa actually ended up making the playing field a lot more even.
We are banking on South Africa to win its boxing day test with a fair amount of ease. The team is going to be hungry for revenge after its defeat last time around. Interestingly, Sri Lanka has won the previous four matches played between these two sides. It is going to come hard at the South Africans but we think the conditions will end up being a bit too much for its batsmen to handle.
Bet on South Africa to win.
