With IPL about to conclude in a few days, the focus in world cricket is slowly but steadily shifting towards ICC Cricket World Cup 2019, but not in Women's Cricket. For South African and Pakistani Women, the focus is mainly to improve their rankings in ICC Women's Championship so as to avail a direct qualification for the World Cup which is to be played in 2021 at New Zealand. While both teams are still a long way off the bottom of the championship, but a loss in this series could prove to be detrimental to their respective chances. Considering a direct qualification at stake, we expect both the sides to come out all guns blazing.
The Proteas are currently at the fifth spot in the championship with 13 points to their name. They'll have a big chance to improve on their points tally and get closer to fourth-placed New Zealand.
Considering that the South African side is going through a time when most of their players are injury-ridden, it's not going to be easy for them even though they are playing at home. They will dearly miss the services of their regular skipper, Dane van Niekerk, who has been fantastic so far in the championship.
The onus will be on the likes of Lizelle Lee, Mignon du Preez, and Chloe Tryon who too haven't done poorly either. With the ball, South Africa have a pretty decent unit with Marizanne Kapp leading the pack. Shabnam Ismail and Ayabong Khaka will assist Kapp, who themselves have been doing pretty well in their recent matches.
Lizelle Lee, Laura Wolvaardt, Andrie Steyn, Shabnim Ismail, Chloe Tryon, Masabata Klaas, Mignon du Preez, Sune Luus, Marizanne Kapp, Tumi Sekhukhune, Sinalo Jafta.
Pakistan Women are right behind the Proteas with 12points to their name, at sixth position. They'll be looking to close the deficit with good performances in the upcoming three matches which is not going to be easy by any means.
Pakistan will mainly rely on the services of their former skipper Sana Mir who has been in brilliant form and has picked up 29 scalps in just 12 matches. However, she doesn't have the same kind of support from the other bowlers as Marizane Kapp has from her teammates. For Pakistani bowling to make a mark on a whole, the likes of Nashra Sandhu and Nida Dar will have to play a good second fiddle which won't really be easy considering the Protean batting unit.
There's not much to speak about Pakistan as far as their batting is concerned. They have an ordinary batting lineup, but the likes of Bismah Maroof, Aiman Anwar, Fatima Sana, and Javeria Khan certainly have the talent to test even the best of the bowling attacks. While it's not going to be easy for the Pakistani side, they certainly have it in them to beat South Africa and should not be taken lightly.
Sidra Ameen, Nahida Khan, Javeria Khan, Bismah Maroof, Nida Dar, Aliya Riaz, Omaima Sohail, Sana Mir, Fatima Sana, Nashra Sandhu, Sidra Nawaz.
With both teams occupying the two consecutive position in the ICC Women's ODI Championship, the contest couldn't have been expected to be closer, at least on paper. While South Africa appeared to be a better side had all their players been available, the absence of Dane van Niekerk has certainly made the playing field even. Having said that, the Proteas are playing at home and have a better-balanced side with experience available in both the departments of the game. The South Africa Women are definitely the firm favorites to register a win in the upcoming fixture.
