There was a lot of build-up to the ODI series between South Africa women and Pakistan women. The two teams are right next to each other in the rankings and are fighting for valuable World Cup qualification points. Unlike the men’s game which is only going to adopt a World Cup qualification system from 2020, the women’s game already has it in place and it gives context to every ODI series being played.
Both South Africa and Pakistan are currently out of the automatic qualification zone and this is why winning this series is very important.
South Africa, being the home team and with a traditional dominance over Pakistan, was the clear favorite entering the series. As the first match showed, though, Pakistan women cannot be taken lightly. Can South Africa fight back and win this ICC Championship match or will Pakistan women wrap up the series win here?
A shocking performance from the South Africa women in the previous match relegated them to their second lowest ODI total in history. Being bowled out for 63 would have been an embarrassment for a team that was talking about its batting strength ahead of the series.
This, however, should not detract from the fundamental strengths of the South African women’s team.
They have a well-settled batting lineup with some exciting players. A collapse of the nature that they suffered in the first match can happen occasionally in cricket. It is best to just forget it and move on. That inning was an anomaly and should be treated as such.
In fact, from a betting perspective, it offers up a better opportunity for punters. A quality South African team playing in home conditions against a mediocre Pakistan women’s team is available at a better price than what was expected.
We have no doubt that Lizelle Lee, Laura Wolvaardt, Sune Luus, and Mignon du Preez will come back harder at Pakistan in this match. The absence of van Niekerk from the South African lineup is a big setback. She was really missed in the first match where she has done the job of rebuilding the inning after a collapse many times.
While the focus is obviously going to be on the batting, the South African bowling is excellent. Shabnim Ismail, Marizanne Kapp, Sun Luus, and Chloe Tyron lead this bowling attack. The bowling unit is also bolstered by the presence of multiple all-rounders in the squad.
This bowling unit had nothing to defend in the first match. Give it a par score to bowl at and we are certain they will make life tough for the Pakistani women.
Lizelle Lee, Laura Wolvaardt, Andrie Steyn, Sune Luus, Mignon du Preez, Chloe Tryon, Sinalo Jafta, Marizanne Kapp, Shabnim Ismail, Masabata Klaas, Tumi Sekhukhune.
A fantastic performance from off-spinner Sana Mir in the opening game was the foundation of the Pakistani win. She took four wickets for eleven runs in her six overs and broke the back of the South African batting.
The fact that Fatima Sana also managed to take an early wicket and the follow-up bowlers did not let the pressure wane was important for the Pakistani’s to emerge victorious.
Now, the pressure to not let the South Africans make a comeback into the contest is going to be immense. Sana Mir is going to have a lot of attention for the next few days and the entire cricketing world is going to be glued to her every ball.
The Pakistani ODI team is not a bad side but it definitely has some clear weaknesses that we expect the South Africans to exploit. The batting lineup for Pakistan is pretty weak and there is a distinct lack of power.
Nida Dar has added some punch to the middle order but there is still a long way to go in this aspect.
Javeria Khan, Bismah Maroof, and Nida Dar are the batting engine of the side. They are quality players whom we have no hesitation in terming as world-class. However, the support around them is quite poor.
All three of these batters will have to be worried about losing their wickets because there is nothing much to follow. This can make the batting very conservative in nature.
Pakistan has an exceptional day out in the previous game but to repeat that performance is going to be difficult. The best outcome for Pakistan would be to bowl first again so that they can put the South African batting under pressure and know exactly what they are going to chase.
Nahida Khan, Sidra Ameen, Javeria Khan, Bismah Maroof, Nida Dar, Aliya Riaz, Sidra Nawaz, Omaima Sohail, Sana Mir, Fatima Sana, Nashra Sandhu.
The team winning the toss is expected to want to field first. Knowing what target to chase allows the batting side to utilize its resources more efficiently and that is what both teams will aim to do here.

South Africa women vs Pakistan women ODI is going to be played at Senwes Park, Potchefstroom. The weather forecast for match day is decent and we should not have any weather-related interruptions. The pitch was not very bad for the first match and it was the shotmaking that caused a sudden clump of wickets to fall rather than anything else.
We expect the same conditions but a better score to be hit this time around. Something around 240 should be considered par for the venue.
We have no hesitation in backing South Africa women for the win here. The core of the side is experienced enough to brush off the opening match and concentrate on the next one. South Africa has dominated Pakistan in the recent past and will be keen to take revenge after being humiliated in the first match.
Bet on the South Africa women to win.
