After facing a disappointing defeat in the opening ODI of the series, the Protean women slammed Pakistan by a massive margin of eight wickets to bounce back in the 3-match ODI series. Their win has left the series hanging in perfect balance with the last match set to govern the result of the series. The third of the series is set to be played on Sunday, 12th May at Benoni. While the first match was a close affair, we saw South African women annihilate Pakistan women in a clinical win in the second ODI. There will be a lot of pressure on both sides with a series win at stake and we expect a cracker of a contest here on Sunday.
South Africa's win in the second ODI was set up by Masabata Klaas' superb hattrick in the 39th Over which kept Pakistan Women from getting to a respectable total just when they were preparing for the late assault.
Considering the way South African women were shot out for a paltry total of 63, the chase of 148 wasn't being perceived to be easy. However, Laura Wolvaardt's ensured with here beautifully made fifty that they sailed to the target. The Protean women eventually overhauled the total with more than 13 overs to spare and 8 wickets in hand.
Lizelle Lee played a wonderful helping hand as she played a 40-run knock to complement Wolvaardt's 74. South African women appeared to be a little complacent in the first match, but they clearly were as clinical they can get in the second one. All in all, South African found back their form and rhythm and it isn't going to be easy to face in the final ODI of the series.
Lizelle Lee, Laura Wolvaardt, Andrie Steyn, Sune Luus, Mignon du Preez, Chloe Tryon, Sinalo Jafta, Marizanne Kapp, Shabnim Ismail, Masabata Klaas, Tumi Sekhukhune.
It was all about Pakistan's veteran spinner Sana Mir in the first ODI as she played an instrumental role in skittling South African out for a low total. She picked up four wickets for just 11 runs before their batsmen wrapped up the chase quickly.
Pakistan batted first in the second match and their batsmen started off in a fine fashion with openers getting them off to a flying 50-run stand. However, their middle-order fragility was once again on display as they labored their way to 147 thereafter with Masabata Klaas' scorching spell not helping their cause.
All in all, Pakistan women displayed in the first ODI that they are not walkovers and can be a dangerous team to deal with. However, just like the men's team, they too have been inconsistent with their performances in recent times. They need to work on their fragile and inexperienced middle order and if their batting manages to come good, they can be a real force to deal with.
Nahida Khan, Sidra Ameen, Javeria Khan, Bismah Maroof, Nida Dar, Aliya Riaz, Omaima Sohail, Sana Mir, Sidra Nawaz, Aiman Anwer, Nashra Sandhu.
After a rather one-sided contest at Potchefstroom, the two sides will move to Benoni where an altogether different set of conditions awaits them. Pakistan did well when in the first match when the conditions were alien to them but faltered in the second ODI. South Africa are clearly a better side between the two, at least on paper and playing in familial conditions will certainly be advantageous for them. For the above-mentioned reasons, we think that South African Women are better placed to win the upcoming encounter and wrap the series 2-1.
