The first match between the South Africa Women and the Pakistan Women was very close. The difference was just three runs in the end and Pakistan showed that it has come to South Africa to win and not just make up the numbers.
There is a lot of room for improvement in the performance of the South Africans. They would feel lucky to have come out the winners in the previous match and need to be a lot more consistent. It is great to see Pakistan’s women cricket team improve and be able to contend away from home as well.
South Africa Women vs Pakistan Women 2nd ODI 2021 is going to be played at Kingsmead, Durban on the 23rd of January 2021.
A poor batting performance was at the core of South Africa’s troubles in the previous match. Lizelle Lee fell in the first over and none of the other batters were able to get going either. Marizanne Kapp was the only batter that looked comfortable before she was out trying to increase the run-rate as well.
All of the batters need to be more mindful of the spinners and rotate the strike better. Sune Luus, Laura Wolvaardt, and Mignon du Preez are all batters that are renowned the world over and should be able to lift their game to make more of an impact.
We would look at Laura Wolvaardt as a good pick to be the top-batter for South Africa in the next game.
South Africa’s bowling was quite good until Diana Baig and Aliya Riaz gave them a scare towards the end. Shabnim Ismail took three wickets, N Mlaba was very economical, and the others did their jobs as well.
It would be a concern that the South African bowling attack was not able to get the job done when it has Pakistan on the mat but nothing to make changes in the team over.
Lizelle Lee, Laura Wolvaardt, Sune Luus, Lara Goodall, Mignon du Preez, Marizanne Kapp, Trisha Chetty, Nadine de Klerk, Shabnim Ismail, Nonkululeko Mlaba, Ayabonga Khaka.
Pakistan may have lost the previous match but we think it will come away with its confidence enhanced. The team was actually better than South Africa for large parts but just lacked that little bit of a finishing push.
The star of the match was Diana Baig who led with the ball and then later with the bat. Her all-round skills add a lot of depth to the team. They are without Bismah Maroof and so all of the other players have to dig a bit deeper.
We like the form that Nida Dar, Aliya Riaz, and Nashra Sandhu have shown as well. If Omaima Sohail and Javeria Khan can get their batting in order then we can easily see this Pakistan team pull off an upset in this series.
If Pakistan can get the opportunity to bat first then it may be a lot more competitive against South Africa.
Nahida Khan, Muneeba Ali, Umaima Sohail, Javeria Khan, Nida Dar, Sidra Nawaz, Aliya Riaz, Fatima Sana, Nashra Sandhu, Diana Baig, Sadia Iqbal.
The team that wins the toss is going to want to bat first. Chasing is difficult in all cricket and especially the women’s game. Both teams have been a bit wobbly in their batting and so chasing could be a big hurdle to overcome.

We think the conditions in Durban were brilliant for cricket in the previous match and the same is expected for this contest. The sun is expected to be out and so no interruptions are likely either. There is a bit of bounce in the wicket that gives the bowlers a chance and also helps the batters play their shots.
A score of around 220 batting first is going to be par.
We are sticking with South Africa in this match even though Pakistan has proven to be a lot better than we expected it to be. It remains to be proven whether the performance in the first match was a one-off or if Pakistan can actually back it up.
Familiarity with home conditions and more depth in the team should give South Africa an edge.
