With not many days and matches to go before the ICC World Cup 2019 begins, Sri Lanka would be mighty disappointed with their first match against Scotland being washed out due to rain. They'll be looking to get some game-time in the similar conditions before the actual World Cup event and their second ODI against Sri Lanka will be their only opportunity before the teams meet to play the warm-up matches. The two teams are set to meet each other on 21st May at the Grange Cricket Club Ground, Edinburgh.
Over the years, Scotland have had a history of defeating full ICC members, especially at their own backyard. A win here will strengthen their bid for a full ICC membership along with showcasing the cricketing fraternity their capability.
On paper, they have a strong lineup with some experienced names in Kyle Coetzer, Calum Macleod, and Matthew Cross. The absence of Ritchie Berrington, who is out for at least four weeks due to an injury, could be felt, but they definitely have ample ammunition to cover it up. While their batting looks fairly good, at least on paper, their bowling is something which will be concerning for their team management.
It was pretty evident in their recent-most encounter as well where they batsmen did exceedingly well to rack up a good total of 325 for 7, but some ordinary bowling in the second innings allowed Afghanistan to chase to the total with considerable ease, albeit on DLS calculations. If their bowlers can deliver what they're expected to, Scotland can be a tough side to face, especially in home conditions.
Matthew Cross, Kyle Coetzer, Calum MacLeod, Craig Wallace, George Munsey, Michael Leask, Tom Sole, Safyaan Sharif, Alasdair Evans, MRJ Watt, Bradley Wheal.
Drafted into the Sri Lankan squad after quite a while, Dimuth Karunaratne was awarded an added responsibility of leading the side and will be looking to get some time in the middle as the captain of the side. Alongside him, the likes of Lahiru Thirimanne and Jeevan Mendis haven't been part of the Sri Lankan 50-over squad and it will be interesting to see how they do if they get a chance to showcase their skills in the upcoming contest.
As far as bilateral series are concerned, Sri Lanka do not really have a record to be proud of. Its been around three years since they've managed to win a two-team ODI series. With a new captain, but a relatively experienced side, they'll be looking to get this record straight with a win in the next game.
Sri Lanka are set to play South Africa and Australia in their warm-up fixtures in the World Cup their upcoming fixture, against Scotland, might well be their best chance to sort out their combinations in both the departments.
Dimuth Karunaratne, HDRL Thirimanne, Avishka Fernando, Kusal Mendis , Angelo Mathews, Dhananjaya de Silva, Thisara Perera, BMAJ Mendis, Suranga Lakmal, Nuwan Pradeep, Isuru Udana.
Both the sides have their strengths and weaknesses which are quite contrary to the others'. While Scotland have plenty of experience on playing in these conditions, not many in the Sri Lankan squad have visited Scotland before. Having said that, the Sri Lankans have plenty of experience of playing in the rest of the world and have a well-balanced lineup. They bat deep with the likes of Thisara Perera and Angelo Mathews available in their lineup. Due to those factors, we think that the Sri Lankans are better placed to emerge victorious in the upcoming encounter.
