The upcoming match of the Bangladesh Premier League will feature the Sylhet Sixers taking on the Chittagong Vikings. This will be the second match of the BPL for both the teams and while the Chittagong Vikings started their season with a resounding win, the Sylhet Sixers suffered a loss against the Comilla Victorians.
The season is still young, though, and there are plenty of opportunities for the players on both sides to make their mark. Once again, a lot of attention will be focused on David Warner who is leading the Sylhet Sixers this BPL season.
For the Chittagong Vikings, disgraced golden boy Mohammad Ashraful is going to attract a lot of attention as well.
Sylhet Sixers may have lost their opening match of the Bangladesh Premier League but we are quite bullish on their prospects this year. The addition of David Warner to their side is massive and brings a lot of things to the table.
David Warner is one of the best T20 players in the world, has captained his IPL side to multiple titles, and has extensive experience of building teams around local youngsters. Captaincy all seems to get the best out of him while batting and that is something that cannot be ignored either.
Sylhet Sixers also have a pretty strong side around David Warner. Liton Das, Sabbir Rahman, and Nicolas Pooran are all very dangerous T20 players.
While Liton Das and Sabbir Rahman are among the more talented batsmen in Bangladesh, Nicolas Pooran is an emerging T20 superstar. Pooran scored 41 off just 26 deliveries and showed that he has the game to adapt to conditions prevalent in the Bangladesh Premier League.
We would like to see Sabbir Rahman and Nicolas Pooran bat at 3 and 4 in the side, though, because holding back your best players just does not make sense in T20 cricket.
The bowling unit of the Sylhet Sixers is pretty good as well. Sandeep Lamichhane is coming off a successful stint in the BBL and is expected to pick a lot of wickets. Taskin Ahmed and Mohammad Irfan lead a pretty useful pace bowling attack as well.
The only glaring weakness that we see is the lack of a quality all-rounder which would have given the Sixers some flexibility.
David Warner, Liton Das, Afif Hossain, Nicholas Pooran, Sabbir Rahman, Nasir Hossain, Alok Kapali, Taskin Ahmed, Sandeep Lamichhane, Al-Amin Hossain, Mohammad Irfan.
The Chittagong Vikings emerged victorious in some difficult batting conditions where both teams seemed to struggle. They bowled out the Rangpur Riders for just 8 but ended up losing seven wickets in trying to chase down that total.
It is difficult to take a lot of information from a game like this because the outcome can be a bit of a lottery and no player is actually able to play his normal game.
The Chittagong Vikings also have a top-heavy batting lineup like most of the teams in the BPL. Mohammad Shahzad and Cameron Delport are going to be opening the batting for them this season and we rate both the players pretty highly.
Cameron Delport is an often overlooked player but he keeps on performing consistently for sides around the world. Mohammad Shahzad is certainly not lacking for attention but his consistency is always questionable.
Shahzad played some remarkable innings in the T10 tournament held recently and showed some good form in the opening match as well. If he can get the Vikings off to some fast starts then his role will be more than fulfilled in the side.
A middle order of Mohammad Ashraful, Mushfiqur Rahim, and Sikandar Raza does not fill us with a lot of confidence. Ashraful is returning after a lengthy ban, Mushfiqur Rahim is not at his best in T20 cricket, and Sikandar Raza has clear limitations as well.
The bowling also looks a little short on quality. Robbie Frylinkc is a good player to have in your side, given that he can be handy with the bat as well, but his bowling is not going to give any opponents sleepless nights.
Abu Jayed, Khaled Ahmed, Nayeem Hasan, and Sunzamul Islam are all talented bowlers but distinctly the second rung of players in Bangladesh cricket at the moment.
A lot of the work will have to be done by the batsmen if the Chittagong Vikings are going to win consistently.
M Shahzad, C Delport, Mohammad Ashraful, Mushfiqur Rahim, Sikandar Raza, Mosaddek Hossain, Robbie Frylinck, Nayeem Hasan, Sunzamul Islam, Abu Jayed, Khaled Ahmed.
The side winning the toss is likely to bat first
The Bangladesh Premier League match between Sylhet Sixers and Chittagong Vikings is going to be played at the Shere Bangla National Stadium, Mirpur, Dhaka. The weather is expected to be hot but clear on match day.
There are a huge number of matches being played at the same ground which was featuring tired pitches, to begin with. The balance is going to continue to shift towards the slower spinners and smaller totals. Making the most of the new ball is going to be very important.
We think the Sylhet Sixers have the side to emerge victorious in this match. They have a strong batting order with power at the top and some big-hitters to make use of towards the end of the inning as well. The bowling also seems to be slightly stronger in the Sylhet Sixers side although that gap is significantly narrower than the batting between the two sides.
Back the Sylhet Sixers to win.
