SL vs BAN Match & Analysis

Bangladesh is going to be playing a test series against Sri Lanka in the backdrop of a pandemic and some of its best players playing the IPL. This series was supposed to have been played in 2019 but was postponed and is finally taking place.

Sri Lanka used to be a dominant force at home but in recent years it has struggled to keep the upper hand over visiting teams. Bangladesh has been unable to figure out a way to be successful in test matches for many years now. Sri Lanka is one of the few teams that Bangladesh seems to be able to get the better of quite consistently, though, and it would definitely be targeting a win in this series.

Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh 1st Test Match 2021 is going to be played at the Pallekele International Stadium, Pallekele starting on the 21st of April 2021.

SL vs BAN Team Previews

Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka has lost its two most recent test series at home but they came against England and New Zealand. These are two strong test nations but in years past, they would have struggled against Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka as well.

This is why we don’t think Sri Lanka can take a win against Bangladesh for granted.

Their squad features the return of Angelo Matthews and Lahiru Kumara, both of whom who missed out against the West Indies. Their presence is going to help strengthen the batting order and add teeth to the fast bowling unit as well.

Sri Lanka’s batting lineup is quite decent. Dimuth Karunaratne, Dinesh Chandimal, Oshada Fernando, and Niroshan Dickwella should all find a place in the side. We are also very excited to see what Pathum Nissanka is able to do in the longest format of the game.

Nissanka has a stellar record at the first-class level and looked very much at ease when he played against the West Indies. With Dhananjay de Silva, Wanindu Hasaranga, and Dasun Shanaka in the squad also, Sri Lanka should be able to put together a batting lineup with a lot of depth.

The big drawback for Sri Lanka in its recent matches has been the bowling. Lasith Embuldeniya was the best bowler in the Test series against England, however, he has been ruled out from the series because of an injury.

Wanindu Hasaranga, Praveen Jayawickrama, and Dilshan Madushanka are the spinners that Sri Lanka has to choose from. Sri Lanka’s bowling is passable in home conditions but it is going to have to rely on some mistakes being made from the Bangladeshi batsmen as well.

Dimuth Karunaratne, HDRL Thirimanne, Oshada Fernando, Angelo Mathews, Dhananjaya de Silva, Pathum Nissanka, Niroshan Dickwella, Wanidu Hasaranga, Suranga Lakmal, MVT Fernando, Lahiru Kumara.

Bangladesh has named 21 players in its squad for this Test series but it will not have the services of Shakib Al Hasan or Mjstafizur Rahman, both of whom are playing for their franchises in the IPL.

There are a lot of very familiar names in the Bangladeshi squad and we don’t think that is a good thing. There are not enough people pushing the incumbents for places and that is why poor performances are going unpunished.

Tamim Iqbal has a very good record against Sri Lanka and in Sri Lanka as well so he is going to be the key batsman for Bangladesh. Other batsmen like Mushfiqur Rahim, Liton Das, Mohammad Mithun, and Mominul Haque should find a place in the lineup.

The slot for the second opener is open and there are reports that Saif Hassan might get a chance. Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Abu Jayed, and Taijul Islam are the players that are going to be in contention for a spinners slot. Bangladesh is probably going to go in with two spinners, though, as Sri Lanka is going to prepare a surface that takes turn for sure.

Bangladesh is a team that has the potential to bat really well but it very rarely seems to do so. The batsmen will match up well against the Sri Lankan attack since it lacks express pace and is basically a spinner heavy attack.

The conditions are also not going to be too alien for it. All it requires is to actually deliver on its promise. Easier said than done with the Bangladeshi test team.

Bangladesh Playing 11

Tamim Iqbal, Saif Hassan, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Mominul Haque, Mushfiqur Rahim, Liton Das, Mehidy Hasan, Taijul Islam, Taskin Ahmed, Abu Jayed, Ebadot Hossain.

SL vs BAN Toss Prediction

The team that wins the toss is going to want to bat first. There is no doubt that batting first is a big advantage as the pitch is expected to break up and take a lot of spin later.

Read our guide on toss predictions to learn how we analyze and come up with our tips.

Pitch and Conditions

The conditions in Pallekele are a bit cloudy and there is some rain expected on at least three days of the test match. That means we could be in for a lot of stoppages. However, matches move very fast in Sri Lanka and draws are very rare. Keep that in mind when you are placing your bets.

The pitch should be somewhat flat to begin and then take an increasing amount of turn as the match progresses. There are enough opportunities to score runs on the first couple of days and a big first-inning score is invaluable.

SL vs BAN Betting Tips

We are going to back Sri Lanka to win in this first match. The reasons for this are that Sri Lanka is welcoming back its most experienced player in Angelo Matthews, it has all of its senior players available, and its batting lineup seems superior to Bangladesh.

Both teams have a weak bowling attack but home advantage should help Sri Lanka get the upper hand in this contest.

Bet on Sri Lanka to win.
