Sri Lanka and Bangladesh played out one of the rare draws in Sri Lanka as the batsmen from both teams made merry on an absolute road. The pitch had nothing in it for any of the bowlers and with weak bowling lineups on both sides, a result never even came close.
There is some hope that the surface for the second test is going to be different and more like we are used to seeing in Pallekele. Nevertheless, the first test would have given a lot of confidence to a lot of batsmen. That is always invaluable. It would have also tired out a lot of the bowlers as they toiled without success.
A short gap between the Tests is going to challenge the fitness of players on both sides as well.
Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh 2nd Test Match 2021 is going to be played at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, Pallekel starting on the 29th of April 2021.
As the home team, Sri Lanka had the option of preparing a surface to its strengths but it chose to prepare something that it thought the Bangladeshis would be uncomfortable with by leaving grass on the surface.
That eventually failed but it gives us an insight into the thinking of the Sri Lankan camp.
The home team is not very confident of its own spinners and is probably a bit wary of the Bangladeshi spinners as well. Now Sri Lanka finds itself in a tough spot. A 0-0 result at home against Bangladesh is not acceptable and a result-oriented pitch has to be spin-friendly.
That means we are likely to see at least one fast-bowler dropped for the addition of a spinner. Lahiru Kumara seems to the player that is most likely to be dropped while Praveen Jayawickrama could be handed a debut.
Even with these changes, though, the Sri Lankan bowling attack remains weak. Its fast-bowlers do not have much pace and are just about average in helpful swinging conditions. The Bangladeshi batsmen were able to face them with ease.
The strength of the Sri Lankan team is its batting. Every single batsman got into double figures in the first test with two scores of over 150 as well. In fact, Karunaratne scored 244 and really made the most of the opportunity.
With Lahiru Thirimanne, Oshada Fernando, Angelo Matthews, Dhananjaya de Silva, Pathum Nissanka, and Niroshan DIckwella, the Sri Lankan batting is very deep and should be a force to be reckoned with at home.
Dimuth Karunaratne, HDRL Thirimanne, Oshada Fernando, Angelo Mathews, Dhananjaya de Silva, Pathum Nissanka, Niroshan Dickwella, Ramesh Mendis, Suranga Lakmal, MVT Fernando, Praveen Jayawickrama.
An excellent batting performance from Tamim Iqbal would have satisfied the Bangladeshi team management. It is often their batting that fails them abroad and to be able to confidently smash the Sri Lankan bowlers all around the park would have given them a lot of confidence.
Bangladesh will know that it is in for a tougher examination against spin this time around but that will not deter it. Sri Lanka may be a foreign country but the conditions are very similar to what Bangladesh plays in at home. In fact, we think it may relish a contest where its spinners get more purchase from the surface.
A batting lineup led by Tamim Iqbal, Mominul Haque, Mushfiqur Rahim, and some other promising players is good news for Bangladesh. We think it should have enough strength and depth to be able to challenge the Sri Lankans.
The one major concern would be the form of Saif Hassan at the top of the order who failed in both innings of the first test.
Among the bowlers, Mehidy Hasan and Taijul Islam have a lot of experience now. The pair of them can be quite difficult to face if they get some help from the surface, which is what we expect the next match to provide.
The fast bowling resources remain quite poor, though.
Taskin Ahmed did manage to pick up three wickets and bowled with lively pace, however, the Bangladeshi bowling attack remains average at best.
Tamim Iqbal, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Saif Hassan, Mominul Haque, Mushfiqur Rahim, Liton Das, Mehidy Hasan, Taijul Islam, Taskin Ahmed, Shoriful Islam, Abu Jayed.
We think the toss is going to play a huge role in this next match. If the surface is a traditional Palekkele wicket then it is going to start to crack and take spin as the match progresses. This makes batting quite tough in the third and fourth inning giving the team that wins the toss a huge advantage.
We think whoever wins the toss is going to want to bat first.

Mickey Arthur admitted his mistake and said he wanted a green seamer to bounce out the Sri Lankans. The underlying nature of the Palekkele wicket did not allow that and we ended up with a flat deck. Now, we expect a return to normal and so the wicket will start out as one that is good for batting but will then move on to become progressively spin-friendly and start to help the spinners from day three onward.
The team that bats first should have a massive advantage.

We are hesitant to go against the home team in this match even though the two teams are quite evenly matched. Sri Lanka has a better batting lineup but Bangladesh has a more experienced spin-bowling attack. The result may come down to the toss and so whichever team wins the toss, make sure you lay a bet on it to win even if you hedge later.
Currently, without knowing which way the toss went, we think Sri Lanka is the team to back in this match. Its batting strength and better knowledge of the conditions should help it prevail.
Bet on Sri Lanka to win.
