SL vs WI Match Prediction - Nov 21, 2021

After a delightful ICC T20 World Cup 2021, the caravan now moves to the longest format of the game. West Indies and Sri Lanka, who are both going through a rebuilding phase, are all set to take on each other in a two-match test series hosted by Sri Lanka.

The first of the two matches is set to be played from 21st November 2021 at Galle International Cricket Stadium, Galle. This is an important series for both these sides given the recent record. Both sides have a lot to look forward to and this series might act as a big stepping stone. A cracker of a contest is certainly on the cards here.

SL vs WI Team Previews

Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka have been in the rebuilding phase for quite a while now and we did see the results of the effort in the recently concluded T20 World Cup. They punched well above what they were expected to and should be brimming with confidence. Besides, the longest format of the game is still their safest format, especially while playing in home conditions.

Inexperience has been a factor affecting them in their recent matches and for that reason, they have roped in some of the experienced campaigners for this series. Angelo Mathews and Suranga Lakmal find themselves back in the squad and it will be interesting to see the value they bring to the table.

Most important player for the hosts will be Dimuth Karunaratne, who looked in exquisite form when Sri Lanka last took the field in this format. However, that was way back in May this year and he and the rest of the players may well be a tad rusty. Other than him as well, Sri Lanka have enough power in the bank to score big in home conditions. Also, given the form Charith Asalanka has been in, we might well see him making a debut here in this match.

All in all, Sri Lanka have a young side but the added experience of Matthews and Lakmal may well be the tonic they need. Besides, they have a terrific record while playing at home and that should boost their confidence. If they are able to play to their potential, West Indies would have to wait for a little longer to get their first win in Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka Playing 11

Dinesh Chandimal, Dimuth Karunaratne, Oshada Fernando, Pathum Nissanka, Dhananjaya de Silva, Angelo Mathews, Ramesh Mendis, Suranga Lakmal, Praveen Jayawickrama, PVD Chameera, Lasith Embuldeniya.

West Indies

West Indies have several happy memories of playing in Sri Lanka, but surprisingly they have never won a match here. In the last 28 years, West Indies have played in Sri Lanka on eleven occasions and have managed to draw four times. More recently though, they have not been as good and that can be attributed to the fact that they are going through a rebuilding phase.

Given the West Indies have performed against other teams in the red-ball version of the game, they will be fancying their chances. The likes of Kyle Myers, Kraigg Brathwaite, and Nkrumah Bonner have been brilliant and a lot will rely on those two players, especially in the conditions where it will be very fourth innings will be difficult to bat.

Earlier this year, West Indies scripted history by successfully chasing down a mammoth total at Dhaka against Bangladesh. When they met Sri Lanka earlier this year in West Indies, they even managed to salvage a good lead in the first innings of two matches, but eventually had to stay content with draws in both those marches.

On paper, West Indies have a decent side with almost all batsmen capable enough to play long innings. They bat deep with multiple all-rounders available and that is certainly a good advantage to have. On the bowling front, however, they apparently lack the experience of playing in these conditions. The role of Jason Holder and Kemar Roach will be very important and if they are able to hold their fort, West Indies will be a tough unit to crack.

West Indies Playing 11

Kraigg Brathwaite, Jermaine Blackwood, Jeremy Solozano, NE Bonner, Roston Chase, Kyle Mayers, Jason Holder, Joshua De Silva, Rahkeem Cornwall, Jomel Warrican, Shannon Gabriel, Shai Hope.
