With Women's T20 World Cup going around along with a couple of high-profile series in men's cricket across the globe, there couldn't be a better time for the cricket fans at the moment. To add to the excitement, West Indies' tour of Sri Lanka is beginning of 22nd February with a One Day International series. It's been a while since their stalwarts have retired, but Sri Lanka and West Indies are both still in the rebuilding phase. They haven't had the best of times in their recent series and this series is likely to act as a make or break for one of the sides. The first ODI of the three-match series is to be played at R Premadasa Stadium, Colombo on Saturday, 22nd February. Considering how evenly matched the two teams are, a cracker of a contest is certainly on the cards.
Over the years, the biggest advantage Sri Lanka have had is that of playing at home and they have this advantage yet again. Their spinners have often been spectacular in familiar conditions and there always is a mystery element added when Sri Lankan spinners are in action.
On paper, Sri Lankan lineup appears to be pretty secure. Dimuth Karunarate has managed to replicate his test form in the shorter version of the game as well and will be a key to Sri Lanka's fortunes yet again. Their middle-order is comprised of familiar names with Kusar Perera, Kusal Mendis, and Angelo Mathews likely to come in at three, four, and five respectively.
Loaded with three experienced all-rounders in Mathews, Dhananjaya de Silva, and Thisara Perera, Sri Lanka bat deep and that could prove to be the difference between two sides. Sri Lanka's only apparent weakness appears to be their inexperienced bowling attack and that can crumble under pressure. Wanindu Hasaranga has done pretty well in the limited number of matches he has played, but it hasn't been the case often that she has been put under the pump. Isuru Udana, Lakshan Sandakan, and Nuwan Pradeep are expected to form the rest of Sri Lanka's bowling attack.
Sri Lanka are coming into this match on the back of pretty decent form. Although they lost both of their last two matches, they registered three back to back wins prior to that and that should give them plenty of confidence. All in all, Sri Lanka have a pretty settled unit and playing at home adds to their stability. Beating them at home has always been difficult and it is not going to be easy this time around as well.
Dimuth Karunaratne, Avishka Fernando, Kusal Perera, Kusal Mendis, Angelo Mathews, Dhananjaya de Silva, Thisara Perera, Wanidu Hasaranga, Isuru Udana, Lakshan Sandakan, Nuwan Pradeep.
As usual, West Indies are still struggling with the administrative and disciplinary issues and that is apparent from the team that has flown in to play this ODI series in Sri Lanka. Two of their most experienced and in-form players in Evin Lewis and Shimron Hetmyer have been left out of the squad owing to fitness issues. Considering how useful Hetmyer has been for them in the recent times, it is a huge blow to the visitors.
After landing on Sri Lankan soil, West Indies played two tour games to get themselves acquainted with the conditions and they didn't do badly at all. With Darren Bravo and Roston Chase doing reasonably well in the first and second match respectively, the absence of Hetmyer and Lewis didn't seem to affect the Windies.
Exactly opposite to Sri Lanka's run, West Indies are coming off two losses followed by three wins in their last five matches. While they would like to continue to build on their three-match winning streak, it is not going to be easy against the upbeat Sri Lankan side. A lot will depend on how they go about their business with the bat, especially with two of their leading batsmen absent from the side.
Just like Sri Lanka's West Indies' bowling appears to be a little inexperienced and that could be a game-changing factor if their bowlers are unable to penetrate early on in the innings. Against Ireland, their bowlers looked listless against the likes of Paul Stirling and Kevin O' Brien and that could be a point they would have pondered upon to improve before the ODI series. Overall, West Indies have an agressive batting unit and if they can bat responsibly through their quota of fifty overs without losing the aggression, they can make things really difficult for the Islanders.
SW Ambris, Shai Hope, Darren Bravo, Roston Chase, Nicholas Pooran, Kieron Pollard, Jason Holder, Hayden Walsh Jr, Keemo Paul, Alzarri Joseph, Sheldon Cottrell.
There is not a lot of difference between the two sides and evidently Sri Lanka are placed at the eighth spot in the ICC rankings as compared to West Indies who are at the ninth spot. On the basis of team combination as well, there's nothing to separate the two sides. It's going to be a cracker of a contest and with home advantage going for them, Sri Lanka appear to be favorites to win the upcoming encounter, not by a huge margin though.
