SLS vs BT Match Prediction & Analysis

Cricket fans across the globe had to wait a wee bit longer as rain delayed the start of the opening encounter of the Caribbean Premier League, which the fans had eagerly been waiting for. Much to everyone's delight, however, the rain didn't have much impact and we managed to get a game, after a waiting period of more than five months.

It is a short tournament with limited travel as all the matches are scheduled to be played in Trinidad, across two grounds. The fifth match of the competition is to be played between St Lucia Zouks and Barbados Tridents on 20th August as Brian Lara Cricket Academy, Tarouba, Trinidad. Coming into the match, both sides would have played a game each and are likely to be well acquainted with the conditions as well as the opponents. The two teams have a contrasting history in the tournament, as far as successful finishes are concerned, and it would be interesting to see how things pan out in the upcoming contest as well as in all the matches to follow.

Team Previews

St Lucia Zouks

St Lucia Zouks finished second from the bottom last year and with Colin Ingram and Rilee Rossouw unavailable this year, finishing better than the last year would be a challenge for them, let alone finishing in the first half.

The Zouks play their first match against Jamaica Tallawahs and given that the Tallawahs was the only team that did worse than Zouks, the encounter between the two teams could highlight a lot of important points.

On paper, St Lucia Zouks looks mediocre at best. Although they have an experienced player leading the side in Daren Sammy, he is past his prime. Mohammad Nabi, who has experience of playing hundreds of T20 matches across the globe, will have a huge role to play for the Zouks to make it out of the group stage. Nabi, along with Roston Chase, will form the backbone of Zouks' middle-order.

There are a few areas where St Lucia Zouks can do well and that might be something they'll be looking to play to their advantage. They have Kimani Melius, who surprised one and all in St Lucia T10 Blast with his towering hits, at their disposal and he could be a surprise factor. With the batting they have, they'll have not option but to go hard right from the word go and hope that the plan comes off. Thanks to the lack of reliable all-rounders, Zouks' batting looks fragile and is, therefore, a good candidate for collapsing under pressure. They'd need their top and middle order to do make the bulk of the contribution and that will be imperative for their success, not only in the upcoming contest but also in the matches to follow.

Previous match update: As expected, St Lucia Zouks looked listless in their opening match. They had their chances but failed to grab onto those. They never looked in control with the bat and challenged the Tallawahs with a modest total to chase down. Although their bowlers kept them in the hunt with two early wickets, their mid-overs bowling lacked venom as Tallawahs found it too easy to keep the required run-rate in check. They need to do a tremendous amount of work to do in both departments of the game to challenge the other teams as the competition is likely to grow more intense with every passing match.

Barbados Tridents

Although Barbados Tridents had a poor start last season, they finished on a high - with the coveted trophy. Despite not having the services of some of their last year's key players, the Tridents will be looking to use the confidence and gain momentum early in the competition. They play a match against St Kitts and Nevis Patriots before their match against the Zouks and their performance in that match could be a good indicator of things to come.

We will be able to talk about their performance more after their contest against the Patriots, but till then there are plenty of things that could be discussed about the Tridents. Barbados Tridents had a weak batting lineup last year and while they have tried to bolster the batting strength with the inclusion of Corey Anderson, their top-order still appears to be a bit hollow. Their fortunes may well depend on whether or not Shai Hope is able to replicate his fifty-over form in T20 Cricket.

Besides Corey Andreson, they have signed Rashid Khan for this season, and considering the stellar record Khan has, this signing could prove to be game-changing for the Tridents. To accompany Rashid Khan in the spin department, the Tridents have the services of Hayden Walsh Jr., Ashley Nurse, and Mitchell Santner, who all have a proven record in the shortest version of the game. In the pace department, however, Barbados Tridents seem to be lacking depth and that is a vulnerability that can easily be exploited in death overs. Jason Holder, their only experienced fast bowler, although, has shown superb skills in red-ball cricket, his T20 record at the death is ordinary.

With the bat, the Tridents have Johnson Charles available at their disposal and he will be looking to have a tournament as good as he had last year. He was the leading run-scorer for the franchise and in the absence of experience at the top, his performance will be vital. Shamarh Brooks recently featured against England in the test series and while he looked a solid material for the shortest format of the game, he still has to prove himself.

All in all, Barbados Tridents is a team that is reliant heavily on its spinners and that, in fact, could prove to be a blessing in disguise considering the nature of the surface. With Corey Anderson, Rashid Khan, and Jason Holder available as the all-rounders, they have a batting lineup that goes deep. If their top-order can set a solid foundation, it won't be surprising to see Barbados Tridents continuing from where they left off in 2019.

Previous match update: Barbados Tridents started their title defense with a much-needed gritty win and they'd certainly be relieved at the end of the match. It was the brilliance of their spinners, in particular Rashid Khan, as they bowled tight spells towards the end of the Patriots' innings and made it difficult for the Patriots. Earlier with the bat, their batsmen struggled to find their feet and were, at one time, staring at a subpar total before their all-rounders bailed them out. They would want to do a lot better in the tournament going forward.

SLS vs BT Toss Prediction

Considering that this match between Barbados Tridents and St Lucia Zouks has a morning start, there will not be a dew factor to be concerned about. However, with the threat of rain looming large, Duckworth Lewis factor will be there in the minds of both captains. There are high chances of the DLS method coming into the picture, and therefore, the team winning the toss should be looking to field first.

Read our guide on toss predictions to learn how we analyze and come up with our tips.

Pitch and Conditions

Scattered showers are expected to hit Trinidad throughout the day and we can expect rain interruptions during the match. As seen in the first match, the surface will be conducive to spin bowling and taking pace off the ball would be helpful for the quicker bowlers. The team batting first will be looking to put at least 170 runs on the board and doing so will not be a walk in the park.

SLS vs BT Betting Tips

This is the encounter between the defending champions and the team that finished fifth last year. While both the teams are missing their last year's key performers, Barbados Tridents appears to be stronger of the two sides. With Rilee Rossouw and Colin Ingram, St Lucia Zouks' batting lineup lacks experience and flair in the middle-order. Barbados Tridents, on the other hand, have excellent spinners who will be keen to exploit this vulnerability of the Zouks. We expect Barbados Tridents to cruise through to an easy win in this upcoming encounter.

Both sides exhibited an average batting performance in their respective first matches. In addition to that, the opening pairs of both sides did not look fluent or acquainted with the surface. The surface, too, is likely to assist the bowlers and we expect an early wicket to fall in a bid to score quickly on a difficult surface.

Shai Hope didn't have a good outing in the last match and perished to a good delivery. His wicket resulted in collapse, which the Tridents will be very wary about. We expect Shai Hope to take the onus and play the role of a sheet-anchor in the upcoming contest. He might not score quickly at the beginning but is certainly a good candidate of playing a useful knock. Bet on him scoring 20 or more runs.

In all the matches gone so far, we haven't really seen a batsman going all-out against a particular bowler. The instances of a batsman trying to get a huge over have been rare. With the same surface being used for multiple matches, we expect the batting to become increasingly difficult. The chances of getting an over with 19 or more runs seem bleak. This is yet another bet that could be profitable in this match.
