The St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots ensured their place in the quarter-finals by beating the Jamaica Tallawahs in a rain-affected match. They now have one more match remaining in the group stages against the Barbados Tridents. Qualification is no longer an option for the Barbados Tridents, who ended up losing all five all of their matches at home, and are currently sitting at the bottom of the table.
The Tridents have two matches remaining which they must win to move up one place in the league standings. All things considered, there is not much context to this match in relation to the tournament as a whole.
Chris Gayle and his men may have won the last match and booked their place in the quarter-finals but they will know they escaped with a victory narrowly. A poor bowling performance from the St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots bowlers meant that the team was facing a 200 plus target once again.
The rain, though, came down during the second inning of the match and turned things in the Patriots favor. It is always easier going at a slightly higher run rate for a shorter duration of time then it is to sustain that kind of performance for the whole inning.
Cameos from Gayle, Mahmudullah, and van der Dussen ensured that the St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots would get over the line with a few balls to spare. There were some positives to build on from this victory and a couple of red flags too.
The good form of Gayle, Mahmudullah, and the emergence of van der Dussen as a power hitter are definite positives for the Patriots. The poor form of the bowlers is something that has been plaguing the team since the beginning and that is something that needs to be rectified as soon as possible. Evin Lewis also recorded another duck in the tournament and his lack of form is hurting the Patriots as well.
The knockouts are not going to give much room for error and so the Patriots must use this last match to get some more things in order.
Ben Cutting bowled his quota of overs well in the last match but the four overs of Alzarri Joseph went for 51, Braithwaite’s three went for 39, and Allen’s four went for 43. It seems like whatever order the bowler's bowl in makes no difference to the end result.
The St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots are going to go down a very dangerous path if they are banking on their batsmen to bail them out each time.
Chris Gayle, Evin Lewis, RVD Dussen, Anton Devcich, Ibrahim Khaleel, Ben Cutting, Mahmudullah, Jeremiah Louis, F Allen, Alzarri Joseph, Tabraiz Shamsi.
Five matches at home have resulted in five sound losses for the Barbados Tridents. Now, with the results of the last few matches going against them, the Tridents have been knocked out of contention for a spot in the quarterfinals.
It is difficult to imagine what the morale in the team management would be like. None of their star players have performed according to expectations and there simply not enough players in the squad to replace all the underperforming ones.
A side with Dwayne Smith, Martin Guptill, Hashim Amla, Steve Smith, Shai Hope, and Nicolas Pooran should not have performed so poorly with the bat. Amla scored his best score of the tournament, 35, in the last match but he took a painstaking 34 balls to do so.
At this point in time, the Barbados Tridents may be tempted to change the batting order completely. There is nothing to lose and maybe they can identify some players for the next season.
We don’t see many of the players in this side being picked for the next season and so the team management has to find a core of players to stick with and then back them. This means, though, that current results may be compromised.
In the immediate sense, their performance against the St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots is not expected to be very strong. The hope for Tridents fans would be that one of the players is able to put in a fantastic individual performance but the chances of that happening seem low.
The surface in Barbados also did not help the team too much but St. Kitts has been full of runs. Maybe that's the change that will spark something in the Tridents batsmen. Mohammad Irfan, Wahab Riaz, and Ashley Nurse will continue to be the backbone of the bowling attack.
It will be interesting to see how they go against the strong Patriots bowling lineup.
Dwayne Smith, Hashim Amla, Sunny Sohal, Shai Hope, Nicholas Pooran, Roston Chase, Dominic Drakes, Jason Holder, Imran Khan, Wahab Riaz, Mohammad Irfan.

A good day with just about 15% chance of rain has been predicted for match day. The surface in Warner Park has been one of the best for batting so far. The Jamaica Tallawahs scored 200 in the last match and the Patriots also scored their runs at a fantastic rate.
We expect the same for this match around. A surface with lots of runs and little in it for the bowlers. A score of around 180 should be considered par.
The St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots have won their last three games against the Barbados Tridents. They once again face them at a low point in the tournament. We think the Patriots will continue their dominance of the Patriots.
Back the St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots to win.
