About the Match
After a very slow start to their campaign, Somerset seems to have found the right balance and is now right in the thick of things in the South Group. A win in this match will see Somerset go right to the top of the table with only net run rate being the separating difference. Sussex, on the other hand, is right at the bottom end of the table and needs this win to stay close to the leaders.
Somerset is definitely one of the teams that have surprised us in this tournament. They do not have a very strong squad of players on paper, there are no T20 superstars or regular wanderers of the global T20 circuit but collectively the Somerset players are performing beyond expectations.
James Hildreth is the highest scorer in the team with 164 runs but he is just one among five other batsmen that have scored over a hundred runs in the tournament. Five separate batsmen have scored fifty plus scores, something which most other teams in the league are lacking.
This means that even if no batsman is scoring the big runs individually, Somerset is still reaching 200 plus totals thanks to useful contributions from more than one player.
Johann Myburgh scored brilliant 64 in the last match laced with 6 sixes and he will once again be the danger man for the opposition.
The bowling department has also been doing reasonably well led by Waller, van der Merwe and Overton but it is clear that Somerset needs to continue to score a lot of runs for its team to win.
Corey Anderson did not play the last match for Somerset and it is unclear if he will be available for this one but his addition could lend another very useful power hitter the Somerset line-up.
Sussex would have been bitterly disappointed in the last match when the rain came down and prevented them from completing the game against Middlesex. They were in a good position with Middlesex 136 for 6 in 17.4 overs and could have reasonable expectations of winning.
The bowling for Sussex was excellent as they did not allow Middlesex any room to get after them. The most impressive bowler was Jofra Archer, whose slingy action and rapid pace made him very difficult to face.
David Wiese also bowled well to take 2 wickets and Chris Jordan seemed to have his radar locked in too. The bowling attack is actually pretty decent and it will interesting to see how they go against the big hitting Somerset batsmen.
Among the batsmen, Sussex has Luke Wright, one of the most highly regarded T20 batsmen in the world and Ross Taylor, currently seeing a resurgence in his batting returns after his eye surgery but apart from these two, the other batsmen have struggled.
Nash, Evans, and Brown may have good days but it is hard to see them win matches consistently for Sussex without one of Wright or Taylor leading the way.
Pitch and Conditions
Unfortunately, the weather forecast for this match is not too good. There are thunderstorms expected in Taunton during the day and the rain is expected to continue for most of the following day as well. We will be lucky to get in any cricket.
