About the Match
It was a complete humiliation for West Indies as they lost the first test match to South Africa by an innings and 220 runs, the two sides will go up against each other on 26th Dec for the 2nd Test at Port Elizabeth with the hosts reigning 1-0. While West Indies will hope to make a comeback soon with renewed efforts by their batsmen and bowlers, South Africa will try to dominate yet again and seal the series with a victory here so as to retain their number one spot on the test rankings.
It was a tremendous performance by Amla, AB de Villiers and Stiaan van Zyl, who scored an unbeaten 101 off 130 on his test debut, that took the team’s total to a massive 552 runs. Amla led from the front with his incredible 208 off 371 while Villiers’ 152 runs from 235 balls ensured to keep the scoreboard ticking; the duo put up a 308-run partnership for the 4th wicket to give the team a definite edge in the first match. Zyl shared responsibility by being a strong partner to Amla and contributed with a 155-run partnership; the batsmen dominated the opponents with sheer conviction and ensured they didn’t have to bat again till the match ended. It was a total annihilation of the West Indies’ batting line-up, thanks to Steyn’s 6-wicket haul in the 2nd innings and Philander’s 4-29 in the first that demolished the Windies’ hopes of getting through. The pace attack looks formidable with Steyn and Philander’s exceptional bowling performances; Morne Morkel has also been consistent by claiming 5 wickets in total giving away only 98 runs while Elgar and Abbott too contributed with the wickets and restricted the opponents well. It was a complete all-round performance by the hosts and they will go ahead with the same kind of determination to win the series convincingly.
The batsmen looked completely at sea as they faced the South African bowling attack; the entire batting line-up collapsed for a meagre 201 runs, getting all out by the 61st over in the first innings. The 2nd innings was more embarrassing for the visitors as they lost the match by an innings and 220 runs, suffering their worst defeat in recent times. Chanderpaul, who was looking at this series as an opportunity to excel could only muster 25 runs in total during the course of the match while Brathwaite and Smith succumbed to pressure early on to lead to the demolition of the batting line-up. Johnson and Samuels need to pull up their socks and come up with a strong middle-order defence while Dinesh Ramdin needs to lead from the front to motivate his team. On the bowling front, while Roach, Benn and Cottrell took regular wickets, they couldn’t make a dent on the Proteans batting line-up, the bowlers need to strategize well and put up a strong performance to overcome the South African challenge. On the other hand, the batsmen must introspect and come up with tactics to do better here if they want to keep their hopes alive and earn back their respect on the international platform.
While West Indies have the talent, they lack the experience and determination to do well; South Africa’s huge victory in the first test and their performance makes them clear favourites to win the 2nd match and series.
