About the Match
The Sunrisers and Delhi Daredevils both played out absolute thrillers in their last match. The SUnrisers won their heart-stopping encounter against the Kings 11 while the Daredevils lost theirs to the Kolkata Knight Riders. This leaves both teams in a very similar situation at this relatively early stage in the tournament.
It would be a little harsh but not entirely untrue to say that the Sunrisers batting lives and dies with David Warner. Yes, players like Moises Henriques, Yuvraj Singh, and even Shikhar Dhawan have played well in patches but none of them strike fear in the bowler's hearts like David Warner does.
Against the Daredevils, a top heavy Sunrisers team will have to make sure they do not lose too many early wickets since the Daredevils attack has taken to most wickets in the powerplay among all the teams in the competition.
The surface in Hyderabad for the last match was not the best for batting. The ball stopped and afforded plenty of help to spinners making run scoring difficult. A similar surface can be expected against Delhi, who have a much better bowling attack than Kings 11 and could make better use of the conditions.
We think for the Sunrisers to win against Delhi not only will David Warner and Shikhar Dhawan have to see off the initial attack but Yuvraj, Deepak Hooda, and Nabi/Cutting will have to be at their best to get the late order runs.
Of course, the Sunrisers have a very good bowling attack of their own. Currently, Bhuvaneshwar Kumar sits on top of the wicket-taking list with 15 wickets followed by his teammate, Rashid Khan, who has 9 to his name.
This bowling attack will once again be required to perform well against batting lineup quite capable of getting big runs. We think that Mohammad Nabi may find himself out of the team after one match and be replaced by either Ben Cutting or Mustafizur Rahman.
One reason that Delhi missed out making the playoffs last year was their propensity to constantly make changes to the team and not always playing their best eleven. A similar thing happened in their last match against Kolkata Knight Riders when they dropped the most economical bowler of the tournament, Shahbaz Nadeem, as well as the man of the match in their last victory, Corey Anderson.
Their batting order also needs a little work because Karun Nair has not shown the kind of form to bat higher than Rishabh Pant and Chris Morris seems to be held back just a little too much to be made full use of.
We think it is almost a certainty that Angelo Mathews will be dropped for the next match in place of either Corey Anderson or maybe even Kagiso Rabada.
Delhi will want their in-form batsmen namely Sanju Samson, Sam Billings and Rishabh Pant to make the most of their starts and help set big totals. Samson, in particular, has looked very dangerous in the powerplay overs and his battle against BHuvaneshwar Kumar will be one to watch out for.
Delhi has, in our opinion, the best bowling attack of all the teams. Zaheer Khan, Chris Morris, and Pat Cummins are all bowling very well while the likes of Shahbaz Nadeem/Mohammad Shami or Amit Mishra can all turn the game on its head.
We have a feeling that Pat Cummins will be the bowler to watch out for in this match against a batting lineup that could be susceptible to raw pace, particularly if David Warner gets out early.
Head To Head
The two teams have played each other 8 times in IPL history and the Sunrisers hold the advantage 5-3. It is, however, important to note that Delhi has registered its three wins in the last four encounters, thus giving them a slight advantage in terms of recent momentum.
We think that this Delhi side has form and quality to beat the Sunrisers at home. Both the teams have a good bowling attack and will probably try to defend a total as well. An intriguing contest lies in store.
Back the Delhi Daredevils To Win.
