As we move forward in the Indian Premier League, things are beginning to heat up in the middle of the points table. As many as five teams are separated by a margin of just two points and all of them fighting for that last playoff spot. Rajasthan Royal's win over Sunrisers Hyderabad last night has certainly made things a tad difficult for Sunrisers Hyderabad. The importance of their next encounter, against Kings XI Punjab, cannot be understated with David Warner set to return home after this match. Also, it is imperative for both the sides to win at least two of their remaining three matches to have any chance to qualify for the next round. The losing team will have to win both their remaining matches making this upcoming encounter ever more important.
It has been a topsy-turvy ride for the Sunrisers in the tournament. They started off the tournament in a belligerent fashion but slowed down a bit soon after. They bounced back to the contention with Kane Williamson coming back to the playing eleven, but then with a couple of back to back losses, they find themselves in a bit of spot of bother.
Up until the last match, it was the opening pair of Jonny Bairstow and David Warner which was carrying them, as far as batting is concerned. Jonny Bairstow has traveled back to England to join English squad and Kane Williamson hasn't been able to produce the same kind of performance in the tournament thus far.
Bairstow's absence led to Manish Pandey coming up the order and this has proved to be a blessing in disguise for the Sunrisers. Pandey has looked in sublime touch in the two matches thus far, striking at a strike-rate of over 150 in both the innings. However, SRH have struggled to score in the death overs throughout the tournament which was apparent in their last match as well.
Wridhhimann Saha didn't really look impressive in the last match and considering Sunrisers' problems with their batting, we may see Shreevats Goswami being slotted in for him. Consequently, they can push Goswami to the top of the order with Williamson dropping down to number three. With Pandey doing well at number three, it can be a risky proposition, but considering the lack of depth in their batting lineup, this will certainly be an option to consider.
Bowling-wise, Sunrisers Hyderabad have had an inconsistent run thus far. They are highly depended on Rashid Khan to produce wickets in the middle overs, which too hasn't happened too often. Bhuvneshvar Kumar hasn't been effective and has picked just eight wickets so far at an average of 41.5. All in all, Sunrisers are highly dependent on a couple of players in each department and will need the rest of the players to step up. If they can do that, SRH will be a force to deal with going ahead in the tournament.
David Warner, KS Williamson, Manish Pandey, V Shankar, Mohammad Nabi, WP Saha, Abhishek Sharma, Rashid Khan, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Khaleel Ahmed, S Sharma.
Kings XI Punjab, just like their opponents, appear to be in a similar kind of situation. They have ten points in eleven games and need to win at least two more to get out of the mid-table muddle. Also, they're coming off two consecutive losses and are desperate for two important points.
Punjab, too, are highly dependent on their openers with their middle-order not doing enough whenever presented with an opportunity. Chris Gayle and KL Rahul have done the bulk of the scoring for the Kings and have 444 and 441 runs to their name respectively. Apart from them, no one has scored consistently for them which definitely is a huge cause of concern for the management.
Injuries to Moises Henriques and Mujeeb ur Rahman hasn't really helped Kings' cause. Furthermore, Ankit Rajpoot has been expensive in all his outings whereas Sam Curran has struggled with consistency. Arshdeep Singh did well in the only chance he got and considering Ashwin's tendency to experiment, we might see Arshdeep Singh slotted back in the eleven.
Their bowling, however, has looked well-rounded in the tournament so far with Mohammad Shami, Ravichandran Ashwin doing well. Having said that, it wasn't a case in the last match where they conceded as many as 80 runs in the last five overs. Also, the absence of an all-rounder who can bowl four overs and slog from the word go is something Kings XI Punjab would be worried about. Overall, Kings XI Punjab are a good unit, but with obvious chinks in their armor. They depend highly on Chris Gayle and KL Rahul and if any of those two get going, it would be hard to stop the Kings.
Lokesh Rahul, Chris Gayle, Mayank Agarwal, David Miller, Nicholas Pooran, Simran Singh, Ravichandran Ashwin, Murugan Ashwin, Mohammed Shami, Arshdeep Singh, Mujeeb Ur Rahman.

Sunrisers Hyderabad and King XI Punjab have plenty in common. They both have a shaky middle-order which isn't amongst the runs right from the beginning of the tournament. Comparing man to man, both the teams look on paper with each other. However, Sunrisers Hyderabad are playing at home where they haven't been easy to beat. Additionally, David Warner and Manish Pandey have been in fabulous form in the last couple of matches which gives them a minor edge. There's almost nothing to separate the two sides, but Sunrisers Hyderabad who have the home advantage are slightly better placed to emerge on top in the upcoming encounter.
