About the Match
Mumbai Indians and Sunrisers Hyderabad occupy the first and fourth positions respectively in the IPL points table. These two teams will now take on each other in the 48th match of the league at Hyderabad on 8th May. On one hand, Mumbai has already qualified for the playoffs and would want to continue their momentum with a win here; on the other, Hyderabad need this win desperately to make sure they do not miss out on that coveted playoff berth.
Sunrisers started their campaign in stunning fashion with wins at home against Royal Challengers Bangalore and Gujarat Lions. The top order clicked, middle order responded admirably when required and the bowling performed well as a unit.
But after the first two matches, as they moved away from home, things changed dramatically. They lost their next two matches against Mumbai and Kolkata, despite Bhuvneshwar’s heroics in both the games. Though, as Sunrisers returned home for their next two games, they were able to get two fantastic wins against Punjab and Delhi.
Despite the momentum of these two wins, a move away from home again resulted in a loss for Hyderabad against Pune. Their next game against Bangalore was a washout but after that, they defeated Punjab and Kolkata comfortably in their next two games. In their next game though, Sunrisers came across a firing Delhi batting line-up and ended up on the losing side; and in their last game, they could not chase a rather straightforward target of 149 against a spirited and disciplined Pune attack.
Sunrisers have played with a fairly settled unit till now and their bowling has been truly exceptional throughout. But they have now lost two games in a row and need a win here desperately to keep the matter of making the playoffs in their own hands.
Mumbai Indians have had an amazing season. They have lost only two games so far, and are the first team to have qualified for the playoffs.
Surprisingly though, they had started their campaign with a loss against Pune. But after that game, Mumbai was able to find the right combination and went on to win six matches in a row, defeating Kolkata, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Gujarat, Punjab and Delhi in the process.
But this winning run came to a halt when Mumbai faced off against Pune again. They could not overcome Pune in their second meeting of the season either and suffered only their second loss. But after this game, Mumbai went on to win their next three games against Gujarat, Bangalore, and Delhi.
Mumbai’s batting has been very good thus far, with Nitish Rana, Pollard, Parthiv Patel, Jos Butler, Rohit Sharma and Pandya brothers playing important roles at different times in different games. In their last game against Delhi, the batsmen fired collectively; and then their bowlers took charge, led by Harbhajan Singh and Karn Sharma, and absolutely destroyed Delhi getting them all out for a mere 66 runs.
Such a strong batting unit, along with a dependable bowling line up, has made Mumbai one of the favorites to win the tournament; and with the kind of momentum they are bringing into this game; they would pose a very stringent challenge for Hyderabad.
Hyderabad and Mumbai are facing each other for the second time this season, and the match being held in Hyderabad offers home advantage to the Sunrisers. Both these teams have had good seasons so far, but Mumbai have already beaten Hyderabad once and they have the confidence and momentum of three consecutive wins on their side. However, Sunrisers have everything to play for and this along with the home-advantage gives them the upper hand in this contest.
