About the Match
Just how far Bangladesh cricket has come can be ascertained by the fact that they will enter the second One Day International against Sri Lanka being played on the latter’s home turf as the favorites. They have a golden opportunity to register their first away ODI series against Sri Lanka. Can the Lankan win this match and keep the series alive?
2nd ODI Preview
Sri Lanka is playing without its best players, Angelo Mathews, as well as someone like Kusal Perera that could have been integral to their plans. That is no excuse, of course, because a team should not be overly dependent on one or two players.
Still, the 90 run loss to Bangladesh would have stung and there look to be some changes in the offing for the next match. The team has added off-spinner Dilruwan Perera and fast bowlers Kulasekara and Nuwan Pradeep to the squad.
It seems most likely that the experienced Kulasekara will make his comeback into the team in place of Lahiru Kumara.
Since Dickwella has been ruled out of the series due to injury, the same batting order that played in the first ODI may be persisted with. Gunathilaka, Tharanga, Mendis and Chandimal all need to ensure that they do not throw away their wickets.
We think that Chandimal has a good shot of becoming the highest scorer for Sri Lanka and Gunaratne too might contribute with runs down the order. The last match also showed that the Sri Lankan batsmen fond the going tough chasing a big total and so they may want to bat first this time.
Bangladesh, on the other hand, were very comfortable batting first but a strong batting lineup means that they will back themselves to chase anything that the Lankans put up as well. Dew played a major part in the first ODI and even though the Sri Lankans did not threaten the Bangladeshi total, it could be a huge nuisance for the bowlers in a close match.
We think that team batting second will have a big advantage in this match.
Bangladesh does not need to do too may things different. Their batting looks very strong with Tamim Iqbal, Soumya Sarkar, Sabbir Rahman, Shakib AL Hasan, Mahmudallah and Mosaddek Hossain. Tamim showed great maturity in the first match and he is our choice to be the top scorer once again.
Mosaddek Hossain is also a fantastic player and could prove to be the difference between a middling total and a good one.
Most exciting for the Bangladeshi fans will be a bowling attack consisting of Mustafizur Rahman, Mehedi Hassan, Shakib Al Hasan and Mashrafe Mortaza. All of them showed that they can change the match on their own and have the necessary firepower to restrict the Sri Lankans to manageable totals.
We think that Bangladesh is very motivated to get their team in the right gear before the Champions Trophy and could end up winning the series in this match itself.
