About the Match
Sri Lanka is playing a 2-test series at home against Pakistan, the 1st test commencing on 6th Aug at Galle International stadium. Pakistan has not played any test for the last six months whereas the home side has been constantly playing test series recently. Pakistan last played Sri Lanka back home with a 3 match series which was level at 1-1 with one match ending in a draw. Most of the present players in the test squads of both sides have figured in that series and hence they are familiar with their approach and techniques. Both Mathews and Misbah have good record for themselves and they have a good mix of experienced and newcomers, thus, having the responsibility to guide the younger players.
Sri Lanka has played a 2-match test series against South Africa which the opponents won by 153 runs took the series 1-0. Silva opened in both the innings with 44 and 20 runs with his partner Taranga contributing 11 and 30; Mathews scored 63 in both the innings while Jayawardene scored a brilliant 165 but failed in the 2nd innings whereas experienced Sangakkara scored a duck in the 1st innings but made up in the 2nd innings with 72 runs. Dickwella in the middle order is playing consistently and Perera is proving well as an all-rounder; the Lankans played against Pakistan in a 3- match test series in Pakistan in the beginning of the season and the series ended 1-1. In the last test they played, Silva, Sangakkara and Jayawardene maintained their good form, with Mathews scoring 91 in the 1st innings followed by 31 in the 2nd whereas Perera played a good all-rounder’s role by a well-made 95 in the 1st innings and took 1 wicket. Herath opens the bowling attack with Lakmal, Herath claiming 9 wickets in the last test against South Africa and 5 wickets against Pakistan in the last test. As a whole the team is well balanced and is expected to give quite a few surprises to the visitors.
New faces and in the process of team building but without test matches for last six months, Pakistan needs a good warm up before the 1st test though there seems to be no opportunity for that. They have last played test matches against the Sri Lankans only about 7 months back on home soil ending the 3-test series 1-1. Opener Shehzad, in the company of Khurram Manzoor, scored a brilliant century in the 1st innings of the last test and captain Misbah produced a consistent 63 and 68 runs in the course of the match. Old horse Younis Khan is still there guiding the younger players; Junaid Khan has been with Lancashire doing a good job with the ball and he took 3 wickets, opening the bowling attack with Talha, who claimed 6 wickets. The team is having good slow bowlers in Saeed Ajmal and Abdur Rehman who have been very economical and consistent in their attack. Overall, the team has good resources and they need to use them to their advantage right from the beginning of the series.
We expect a very interesting match at Galle and though the visitors will surely pull out tricks from their bags, the home side will do everything to emerge victorious on home soil.
