About the Match
The colorful Caribbean Islands are set to host the Tri-Nation tournament between India, West Indies and Sri Lanka. The first game of this tri-series would be played on 28th June 2013 at Kingston at 02:30pm GMT. This tournament would be important not only from rankings point of view, but also building a strong team for World Cup 2015. Both Sri Lanka and West Indies are playing under relatively younger and inexperienced captains, Angelo Mathews and Dwayne Bravo. It would be a stern test for both of them in process of building a team strong enough to bring home the World Cup. As far as the first match of the tournament is concerned, it is expected to be an excellent game of Cricket with young blood being majority in both the sides.
Under the captaincy of Angelo Mathews, Sri Lankan campaign hasn’t been as good as they’d have liked. Just like before, they made it to an ICC event knockout game and then lost the way. Sri Lanka made it to the semifinals of the ICC Champions Trophy after winning two crucial games against England and Australia. They have a strong batting lineup, maybe a little over dependent on their senior players. Their bowling is good with experience Malinga and Kulasekara leading the attack. The spin of Herath might come in handy on slow tracks of West Indies. Dilshan might not be available to play due to the injury he sustained against India in the semifinals. Sri Lanka still looks to be a good side with strong batting and effective bowling lineup.
There were days when no one wanted to face West Indies in West Indies. This might not be true now, but West Indies is marching forward with their aim of building a strong squad to achieve that domination once again. West Indies won the T20 World Cup and then posed good enough challenge in Champions Trophy. With Chris Gayle at the top of the order and Pollard to follow in middle, their scoring ability can never be questioned and the Bravo brothers provide stability in the middle order. Sunil Narine has already proved his worth when it comes to being a miser and taking wickets. West Indies is an excellent side which full of flair and can be a really tough contender if Gayle gets going.
It would be test of character for both Angelo Mathews and Dwayne Bravo as it is a very important game for both of them as captains. Sri Lanka has an experienced batting lineup with good bowling, but the absence of Dilshan might hurt their balance. West Indies is a well-balanced site with nice mixture of aggressive and reliable players in their batting. Their bowling is reasonably strong with Best and Narine leading the attack. With many all-rounders, the Caribbean team seems to be better balance and I think it is the better team for the match.
West Indies, 1.73 @ William Hill
Sri Lankan opening pair struggled in the Champions Trophy with Janith Perera not getting runs. In case Tillakaratne Dilshan does not play first ODI, it would be more pressure on him to score. On the contrary, West Indies’ opening pair played well in the recently concluded tournament. Chris Gayle and Johnson Charles are batting well and have ability to score very quickly. I think West Indies would outscore Sri Lanka in the first 15 Overs.
