About the Match
With 4 points from five matches, the Patriots have done well to climb up to the 3rd position and will take on Barbados Tridents, who are right on top of the points table with 8 points from six matches, in the upcoming league match on 6th July at Basseterre. While the Patriots registered an emphatic win over Tallawahs by a massive 119 runs in the last outing, the Tridents were defeated by Zouks on Friday by 30 runs. Both teams have good resources at hand and will definitely come out all guns blazing on Monday to take their respective campaigns ahead.
St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots
It was a power-packed performance by the bowlers Shamsi and Cottrell that caused a complete annihilation of the Tallawahs in their chase for a formidable 200 runs in the last game that helped the team to a superb victory. Shamsi’s chinaman style bowling helped him claim 4 wickets giving away only 23 runs while Cottrell’s pace scalped important wickets like Gayle, Walton and Lynn at the very beginning of the second innings. The batsmen had earlier been fearless in their approach and players like Evin Lewis, who posted a heroic 82 off 45 along with Guptill and Brathwaite, who each scored 30+ runs, helped them post a competitive 199 on board.
In the previous match against Warriors, they couldn’t defend a total of 149 runs and lost the match by 7 wickets in the 17th over itself. Although Guptill and Lewis started well and posted a 66-run opening stand, they lost the momentum in the middle. Bowlers Cottrell, Tanvir and Shamsi could take only a wicket each but they gave away too many easy runs.
While their recent massive win has given them a huge morale boost, they must be cautious against the Tridents who are on a high with their good performance so far. If the bowlers can yet again come out with all the fire-power and the batsmen can learn to keep their wickets safe, then this is definitely a team to watch out for.
Chasing 203 runs, the batsmen couldn’t step up on the pedal and come out with the big runs, which caused their defeat against the Zouks by 30 runs. Although the defeat has caused some worry, they will rise above it and focus on the positives that have kept them ahead in the race. Apart from Mendis who took 3-33, the others weren’t impressive enough to restrict the opponents to a low total; they will need to do better in the upcoming match to go back to their winning ways.
In the earlier match against the Zouks, they had won the match by 15 runs by defending a good total of 148 runs; Emrit claimed 3-20 and looks to be in good form just like Rampaul, Peterson and Mendis continue to be.
The Tridents will need to put their recent defeat behind them and rise up to the challenge to come out stronger; if the bowlers can keep up the pressure on the opponent, they will surely continue to be on top.
While the Patriots are high on confidence after their massive win, we feel that the Tridents are a more consistent side and will bounce back to win the match on Monday.
