About the Match
Suffering a heart-wrenching defeat against Kolkata Knight Riders, Sunrisers Hyderabad will now face Royal Challengers Bangalore on May 20th at Hyderabad to try and keep their campaign alive; with 8 points from 11 matches, Hyderabad needs to win the contest to remain hopeful of finishing in the top-four. Bangalore on the other hand earned a refreshing win against the formidable Chennai Super Kings to take their points tally to 10 from 11 matches; both teams have done well to fight hard for survival but this will be a key contest to make it to the play-offs.
The Sunrisers had a surprise in store for the Kolkata Knigth Riders when Darren Sammy replaced Shikhar Dhawan for the toss and captained the side in their contest on Sunday. Whatever the reasons for the change, the result was not favourable as they lost to Kolkata by 7 wickets; though the batsmen did well to post 142 runs, the bowlers weren;t able to defend the total against a determined opposition. Steyn and Sharma got a wicket each and Utthappa’s run-out in the middle by the efforts of Ojha and Sammy gave them hope but they couldn’t contain Kolkata from scoring the winning runs. Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Pathan, Sammy and Mishra failed to take wickets and too many runs were given away. David Warner is in good from as he scored 34 off 18 balls and Irfan Pathan too contributed well with the bat scoring 23 off 19 balls but they needed a few more runs to be able to defend against a sturdy Kolkata batting line-up. The upcoming match against Bangalore will be a tough one and they need to strategize well to make use of the home advantage.
Royal Challengers Bangalore
It was a fight for survival against Chennai Super Kings and the bowlers did their spin magic to lead the team to victory; restricting the opponents to 138 runs, Varun Aaron, Muralitharan and Ahmed caused havoc in the Chennai batting line-up and later the batsmen, Gayle, Kohli and AB de Villiers delivered with the bat to take the team home safely. With 10 points on the board from 11 matches, the team has managed to survive for now and need to bring out good performances in all the remaining matches. Aaron’s fast bowling earned the team wickets in the 5th over and soon after Murali struck to remove the dangerous looking Hussey; Ahmed not only took a wicket but also scored the winning four runs from the penultimate delivery to win the match for his side. Gayle’s 46 off 50 balls provided a good start but it was the middle order that kept its wickets and Yuvraj too threatened the opponents. It was an all-round effort by the team and now this win will surely boost their morale for the upcoming matches.
Both sides have had similar experiences in the tournament so far and though Hyderabad lost the contest against Kolkata and are 2 points below Bangalore, they are going in with a positive attitude. Bangalore on the other hand has a boosted morale after its superb match-winning performance against Chennai and even though they are playing away from home, looks confident to win the match here and keep their hopes alive.
