About the Match
Madurai Super Giant has had a lot of trouble starting in this tournament and is, in fact, looking for their first win. Their opponents, the Chepauk Super Gillies, are much better placed second on the league table with three wins from their four games so far. Can Madurai change things up and find a way to get on the board or will their miserable season continue?
Madurai Super Giant
The last match that Madurai played was against the Trichy Warriors that they lost after coming very close. Chasing a stiff target of 187, Super Giant ended up just 2 runs short. The big positive that they could take from that batting effort was the form of their skipper, Arun Karthik.
His innings of 79 from 34 balls included four sixes and was absolutely exhilarating to watch. It was sad that no other top order batsman contributed alongside although Vignesh did score a very valuable 38 not out batting at 7.
There is no doubt that Madurai will need Arun Karthik to score impressively in most matches if they have to compete. In the three matches they have played up until now, no other batsman apart from his has scored more than 70 runs in total.
Karthik is also the only one to score a fifty for Madurai up until now.
The Super Giant bowling is also flimsy on paper. No bowler has taken more than 2 wickets in total so far and only 8 wickets have fallen to the bowlers across three matches.
Players like Chandrasekar, L Vignesh, and Raja will need to step up soon otherwise things are looking dire for Madurai.
Chepauk Super Gillies
A fantastic win in the last game against Karaikudi Kaalai would have given a lot of confidence to the Super Gillies. They are easily among the stronger teams in this competition and one of the only ones that look likely to challenge the Patriots.
A large part of their success has been the emergence of R Sai Kishore as a bowler. His five wickets came for 13 runs in just 4 overs and essentially ended the contest right there. With 9 wickets in this tournament in total, Sai Kishore has quickly cemented his place as the leader of this bowling attack.
That is not to say that R Sathish and R Alexander have been any less impressive.
These three are the lynchpins of the Super Gillies bowling attack, one that should be able to run amok against Madurai.
The Gillies have also benefited a lot from the consistency that Gopinath has shown at the top of the order. His 137 runs have been scored at a strike rate of .60, nothing special, but he bats through the innings and s two not outs to his name as well.
Others like Anthony Dhas, Thalaivan Sargunam, and Sasidev can take up the mantle of getting the big hits.
The Gillies do not have the best batting lineup but they always seem to contribute through the order to end up with some big scores.
Pitch and Conditions
It is going to be a cloudy day with around 10-15% chance of rain in Chennai. The humidity is going to be sapping but conditions should ease up by the time the match actually gets underway. The Chepauk pitch offers help to the spinners and should make for some tough scoring conditions.
150 is going to be a good score batting first.
