About the Match
The VB Thiruvallur Veerans take on the Madurai Super Giant in a match that is a must-win for them. Madurai, on the other hand, has struggled in this tournament and is yet to win a match. The morale in the team may be low but with qualification out of the question for them, they have nothing to lose and thus doubly dangerous.
Madurai Super Giant
Four matches, four losses and it looks like another season of abject despair for the Madurai Super Giant. They had come into this tournament with a lot of hope after bringing some new faces into the team, bringing in new management and changing their name.
None of those things seem to have worked as the cricket on the field continues to be amateurish.
Their openers in the last match got off to a great start and set up a wonderful platform for the team. Madurai slipped from a position of strength, 116 for no loss to 118 for 3 in the space of 6 balls and could never recover.
In Arun Karthik and PS Chandran, Madurai has an excellent opening pair but no one of note to follow after. Shahrukh Khan was supposed to be the person to change things around in the middle order but his total of 55 runs in the tournament has been a major disappointment.
The Madurai batting order is very top heavy and so they are in real trouble if one of their openers falls early. Opposition teams will always feel they are just a couple of wickets away from triggering a collapse irrespective of the position Madurai finds itself in.
The bowling has also not been too much better, unfortunately. Karthikeyan is the only bowler who has made some impact in the three matches he has played but even he also has only 4 wickets to his name. No bowler for the team has more than 2 wickets in a match and none of the regular bowlers has an economy rate of less than 8.0.
VB Thiruvallur Veerans
After 5 matches in this year’s TNPL, the Veerans have only won 2 matches. Considering the kind of batting order that the Veerans possess, they would be very disappointed with this return. Youngsters Chaturved and Siddharth have been revelations for their team and skipper Baba Aparajith also has 145 runs to his name.
The problem has been these performances have not come at the same time to help their team win or stellar performances from the other side turned the tide.
Now, the Veerans have no option but to win their remaining matches to have a chance of making the final four. We think that the Veerans have the batting to take full advantage of a poor Madurai bowling attack but the conditions at Tirunelveli are fast becoming very difficult for the batsmen.
The Thiruvallur bowling is also vastly superior to Madurai which should help them keep the score down.
Rahil Shah, R Silambarasan, and M Rangarajan are going to be leading the attack for the Veerans. Rahil Shah has 11 wickets to his name while Silambarasan has 9 to be two of the standout performers in the entire league.
Pitch and Conditions
The pitch at Tirunelveli is low, dusty and slow. The only time run scoring is going to be easy is with the new ball and so teams must make full use of that.
There is a slight chance of showers in the evening but the forecast gets better by the time the match is about to get underway.
