About the Match
The upcoming match between the Chepauk Super Gillies and the Lyca Kovai Kings promises to be a close one. Both the teams won their opening matches with ease and will now look to join the Patriots at the top of the table.
Chepauk Super Gillies
The Super Gillies won their first match with ease chasing down a modest target with a couple of overs to spare. The finalists from the first season look like definite contenders this time around as well with a settled side and an early indication of form.
A large part of the success they found last time was the form their openers carried throughout the tournament. Gopinath and Sargunam scored 273 and 227 runs in last year’s edition of the TNP respectively with 19 sixes between them.
This year too Gopinath started with a confident 54 not out that was not flashy but did the job for his team. The other two players that were crucial for the Super Gillies were Sarvanan and R Sathish. The fact that the team won without these players contributing is a big positive.
New recruit S Karthik started off the tournament with a 42 and looks like he will help strengthen this batting order even further.
The bowlers started out brilliantly on Tirunelveli pitch that was a little slow. R Sathish was the pick of the bowlers with three wickets while Sai Kishore also returned enviable figures of two wickets for 16 runs in four completed overs.
This is a young bowling attack with a lot of potential and we are sure that the likes of R Alexander and Antony Dhas will also provide able support to the others.
Lyca Kovai Kings
The Kovai Kings had a tricky chase of 158 against Karaikudi Kaalai that they aced thanks to a fantastic opening partnership. Anirudh Sita Ram scored 45 while L Suryaprakash scored 60 and it was their partnership of 87 which set the base for the others.
Anirudh Sita Ram was also the stand out batsman for the Lyca Kovai Kings in the last season with 304 runs to his name while Suryaprakash the next best with 196 runs to his name.
Openers are followed by a middle order that is not the strongest before their big hitters come in. R Rohith and Harish Kumar provided finishing touches to a lot of the team efforts in the last season and will be crucial this year as well.
The bowling effort in the last match was not too bad but definitely not the best that Lyca Kovai Kings can come up with. Their highest wickets takers from the last season, Harish Kumar, and K Vignesh looked a little rusty but Syed Mohammad started off well with 2 wickets for 26 runs from his four overs.
M Mohammad and M Siddharth though were very expensive and unable to bowl their quota of overs. A stronger batting lineup could have made the Kovai Kings pay and this is one aspect of the game that they will have to work on.
Pitch and Conditions
The pitch at the Chidambaram stadium is expected to be on the slower side with some help for the spinners although the batsmen should have a better time than in Tirunelveli. We think a score of 165-170 will be difficult to chase down.
This is a match between two evenly matched and very similar sides, They played twice last year with both teams winning one match.
We think the Chepauk Super Gillies have a slightly better chance in this one.
