The South Group is going to be very closely contested till the end on the evidence of the form that all the teams have shown. Two of the teams that will hope to be in the top half of the table when everything shakes out are Sussex and Somerset. Both teams are in an excellent place in the league table right now and a win in this game will take them right to the top.
Sussex has been propelled this far thanks to the brilliance of some brilliant T20 players while Somerset always seems to command more of a team performance. Which one will come out top in this encounter?
A low scoring loss against Gloucestershire and then a comfortable victory against Middlesex has got Sussex back into the groove of things after a couple of rained out games. Not playing for too long can also be tough on teams especially when they are in good form.
The batting for Sussex has been led by Laurie Evans so far who has scored 247 runs in his 6 innings and stayed not out two times. Luke Wright at the top of the order has been pretty good as well as has Salt but both of them would like to kick on from this good start in the tournament.
There have not been too many contributions apart from these with the bat and that is something that will be of concern to Sussex. Players like Wiese, Bruce, and even Archer all have proven ability with the bat but their return in the matches played so far has been very poor.
Perhaps one of the biggest positives to emerge in recent weeks for Sussex has been the news that Rashid Khan is going to be around for the remainder of the tournament as well. That is a huge boost to the bowling attack. Khan has picked up 8 wickets and is giving away runs at an economy rate of just 7.00.
Jofra Archer picked up a hat trick recently and continues to impress with his easy, languid, pace. The presence of Chris Jordan, Tymal Mills, and Wiese in the squad makes this one of the strongest bowling attacks in the entire tournament.
Philip Salt, LJ Wright, Laurie Evans, Delray Rawlins, Tom Bruce, Michael Burgess , D Wiese, Jofra Chioke Archer, Chris Jordan, Rashid Khan, Danny Briggs.
Somerset has won its last three matches in emphatic fashion and would come into this encounter full of confidence. All of Somerset’s disciplines are performing at a high level right now.
The run scoring has been led by Corey Anderson, Peter Trego, Hames Hildreth, and even Myburgh has struck form off late. Lewis Gregory has been leading the team from the front with both the bat and ball.
He has almost 200 runs in the competition and has taken 9 wickets to his name as well.
Roelof van der Merwe and Jamie Overton have been the best bowlers for Somerset picking the most wickets and giving away runs at a reasonable rate but the likes of James Taylor and Waller have done decently as well.
The reason for success for this Somerset team has been its batting. The bowling does well when it has some runs to defend but setting up matches has not been something that the bowlers have been able to do regularly.
Sussex is a good batting side and Somerset will want its bowlers to be able to pull their weight in this game.
JG Myburgh, Tom Banton, PD Trego, JC Hildreth, TB Abell, Corey Anderson, Lewis Gregory, RE Van Der Merwe, Jamie Overton, Jerome Taylor, MTC Waller.
The team winning the toss is expected to field first
The weather prediction for Brighton is for a clear, sunny day with very little chance of rain. The pitch at Brighton has been a little slow in the last few matches and not been very conducive to high scores. This match is going to be played between two strong batting sides and so we could see a change this time around.
Expect the par score to be around 160.
Sussex has a better bowling attack and is playing in home conditions. We think they have enough firepower in the side to overcome Somerset’s batting strength.
Back Sussex to win.
