About the Match
Sussex Sharks and Kent Spitfires are to meet each other in what may be the last hope for both the sides on 24th July 2013 at Canterbury. Kent got off the mark in their last game against Hampshire and will be hoping that their winning run lasts till the last league game. Sussex Sharks are not at all far away from their opponents as they stand at last but one place in the points table. Sussex is already out of the tournament, unless they win all their remaining games by sky-high margins which is certainly next to impossible. This game is being termed as a ‘basement clash’ due to the fact that both teams lay at the bottom two places of the table.
In spite of having one of the most dangerous batting orders in T20 Cricket, the Sharks have fumbled and fumbled badly. They’ve won just one game out of eight and on many occasions, they did not even threaten to win at any stage of the game. One of the major reasons for their position is the absence of a strike bowler. They have many all-rounders who can bowl a bit, but no one who can do the damage early on. However, their batting is something they can be proud of, at least on paper. If the Sharks can do well in bowling, they have enough in their batting to chase down very good totals as well.
One time title winners would be on high after ending the winning streak of Hampshire Royals. They are the only team to beat Royals in this edition of FLT20. This game will probably be the last chance for Spitfires to make any impact on table. They would have to win all games from here which seems to be an unlikely scenario, but isn’t impossible. There were some changes in their side as compared to their side in their previous matches. They might not have big names in their squad, but they can play as a team and when they do so, it gets very tough for the opponent as it was on the other day.
Neither of the teams meeting on the day is expected to make it to the knockout stage. Kent might still have an outside chance to qualify, but the Sharks are almost out. Can they extend their winning run and get closer to outside edge to the qualification? Considering form and team on paper, Sussex Sharks look ahead of Spitfires in comparison. However, Cricket is a game of uncertainly and T20 is even more so. Still, it is more likely that Sussex Sharks their team on paper, and knock Kent Spitfires out as well in this ‘basement clash’.
