A win for Melbourne Stars has only increased the distance between them and the team placed at the second spot on the ladder. Since the Stars have already qualified for the playoffs, this win is likely to have no to little impact on them or the Sixers, who are placed on the second spot. The Sixers will be looking to bridge this gap, which has grown to six points now, in their upcoming match wherein they face Hobart Hurricanes. The match between the two sides is to be played at Sydney Cricket Ground, Sydney, on Thursday, 16th January. Hobart Hurricanes have had a dismal tournament so far and although they are still in the hunt to qualify, the chances appear to be bleak. They are in a desperate need of a win here and will come out all guns blazing. A cracking contest is certainly on the cards in Sydney on Thursday.
With six wins in nine matches, Sydney Sixers have 12 points to their name and are placed at the second spot on the ladder, right behind Melbourne Stars. Even though, it seems rather improbable that the Sixers will be able to get to the top of the ladder in this edition, they'll certainly try to run away from the teams below them.
Keeping aside their recent loss to Melbourne Stars, the Sixers have done pretty well in their recent matches. Before their match against the Stars, the Sixers won five matches in a row and rose from the bottom half of the table to the second spot.
The Stars, however, proved to be too hot to handle for the Sixers and they'd be taking the learnings from that into the upcoming match of the tournament. Marcus Stoinis was pretty severe on their bowlers as Melbourne Stars racked up a total of 219 runs batting first. While the likes of Jackson Bird, Steven O'Keefe, and Llloyd Pope did well with the ball, their other bowlers gave away too many runs. Ben Dwarshius and Tom Curran gave away 119 runs combined in their eight overs and that turned out to be the difference between the two sides.
It was never going to be an easy chase for the Sixers and odds were stacked against them. Over-reliant on Josh Phillipe, the Sixers received an early set-back as Phillipe edged through to the keeper and returned to the pavilion in the first over of the innings. Barring Moises Henriques and Ben Dwarshius, no one looked settled to take on Stars' bowlers as the Sixers lost the match by 44 runs.
Josh Philippe, Daniel Hughes, J Vince, Moises Henriques, Jordan Silk, Tom Curran, J Avendano, B Dwarshuis, JM Bird, Steve O'Keefe, Benjamin Manenti.
The problems just do not seem to end for the Hurricanes as they extended their losing streak to three with a one-sided defeat to Perth Scorchers in the last match. As it stands, they are placed at the seventh spot on the points table with a dismal net run-rate of-0.89 and need to win almost all their matches from here.
A 77-run loss in the last match dented their net run-rate heavily and getting over it is going to take some work. The Hurricanes' batting has been inconsistent, to say the least, and pushing David Miller to the top of the order didn't help their cause either. They are dearly missing D'Arcy Short, who is away on Indian tour with Australian team, and the sole onus is on Matthew Wade to deal bulk of the damage.
While their batting has been dismal, their bowlers haven't done that poorly. Apart from one game wherein Chris Lynn was pretty severe on their bowlers, the likes of Clive Rose, Thomas Rose, Scott Boland, and Qais Ahmed have done just enough to keep them in the gave. Their batting, however, has been their achilees' heel and needs to perform sooner than later.
Matthew Wade, Caleb Jewell, J Doran, Ben McDermott, David Miller, GJ Bailey, Clive Rose, Thomas Rogers, Nathan Ellis, Qais Ahmad, Scott Boland.

The two teams are placed equidistant from the center of the points table and the importance of this match for the Hurricanes cannot be overstated. The two teams have posted contrasting performances in the tournament so far. While the Sixers seem to be doing pretty well, the Hurricanes appear to be in all sorts of troubles. The Hurricanes still haven't got their combination going and the absence of D'Arcy Short has only amplified their troubles. Comparing the two teams on the basis of form and composition, Sydney Sixers going in as firm favorites to win the next game.
