Only once in the history of the Big Bash League has a team finished at the top of the group standings and then gone on to win the title. The Melbourne Stars will be hoping to become the second as they take on the Sydney Sixers in a repeat of the Qualifier.
The new format of BBL Finals paid off for the two teams that are playing the BBL 09 Final. The Sydney Sixers won one match and went straight to the title contest while the Melbourne Stars got a second chance to join them.
This is going to be the fourth time that the two teams are playing against each other in BBL 09 and will have a fair bit of idea of things to expect. The weather is threatening to play spoilsport, though, and that is another thing that we will have to watch out for.
Sydney Sixers vs Melbourne Stars BBL 09 Final is going to be played at the Sydney Cricket Ground, Sydney on the 8th of February 2020.
The Sydney Sixers won the BBL 09 Qualifier against the Melbourne Stars by a hefty 43 runs. It was a match in which the Sydney Sixers were never really tested and the result was clear to everyone far before the match ended.
That will not mean that the Sydney Sixers are going to get complacent for this encounter. The Sixers are not the strongest batting team and none of their players batted fluently even in the game they did win. Josh Philippe is dangerous at the top of the order while the class of Steven Smith is unquestionable.
While Moises Henriques and Jordan Silk have played a couple of impressive innings, overall, the Sydney Sixers batting is a bit shaky. The Sixers also don’t have the power that the Melbourne Stars have in their side but a winning run leading up to this match gives it a slight advantage.
The bowling unit was responsible for shaping the win against the Stars in the Qualifier and we don’t see any change to the personnel for this match either. Josh Hazelwood, Nathan Lyon, Sean Abbott, Steve O’Keefe, and Ben Dwarshius are all experienced campaigners that will revel in the pressure playing a BBL Final.
We are looking at Steve O’Keefe and Nathan Lyon to be the game changers in this match for the Sydney Sixers.
Josh Philippe, J Vince, Steven Smith, Moises Henriques, Daniel Hughes, Jordan Silk, Sean Abbott, B Dwarshuis, Steve O'Keefe, Nathan Michael Lyon, JR Hazlewood.
A return to form for Marcus Stoinis saw the Melbourne Stars roar into the BBL Final. We believe the team will be hurting after the criticism it received after the loss to Sydney Sixers in the Qualifier and be looking to strike back hard.
As a team, it is clear that the Melbourne Stars have some glaring weaknesses and a lot of strengths to fall back on.
The batting looks very good when at least one of Marcus Stoinis or Glenn Maxwell scores runs. If both of them get in the act then it is going to be hard to stop the Stars. Nic Maddinson has been a walking wicket at the top of the order while the middle-order has not covered itself in glory withers.
Nick Larkin has played a couple of very good innings and shown the capability to support the Stars batting unit. The Melbourne Stars played the same team as the Qualifier in the match against Sydney Thunder and we think they are not going to make any more changes to their team either.
The role of Pater Handscomb becomes quite integral since he is one of the better players of spin in the lineup.
The Melbourne Stars have been lucky to have found Haris Rauf as their bowling spearhead this season. With Adam Zampa picking up wickets regularly as well, the Melbourne Stars have a very decent bowling attack as well. We don’t think the rest of the lineup quite matches up to the Sydney Sixers but in T20 cricket, it is not about picking up wickets all the time.
Bowlers like Glenn Maxwell, Daniel Worrall, and Clint Hinchcliffe have an opportunity to keep the runs down and ramp up the pressure through that.
The Melbourne Stars have been the most successful team in BBL 09 and they will come to the BBL Final all guns blazing.
Marcus Stoinis, Nic Maddinson, Glenn Maxwell, N Larkin, Peter Handscomb, Ben Dunk, Sebastian Gotch, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Adam Zampa, D Worrall, Haris Rauf.
The team that wins the toss is going to want to field first.

The weather forecast for Sydney on match day is terrible. There is close to 100% chance of rain for most of the day. We are going to be very lucky to get any play and hoping for a full 20 over match seems foolhardy at this time.
We could have a situation where the BBL 09 Final is decided in a 5 over a side slog.
The pitch at the SCG is going to be generally good for batting but a bit on the slower side. The conditions are not too dissimilar to what the MCG offered up this season as well so neither side is going to feel out of place.
Dream11 tips and Dream11 prediction for Sydney Sixers vs Melbourne Stars BBL 09 Final
We are backing the Melbourne Stars to win this match. This match is going to be shortened and so the advantage of having more power in their side, more players that can play the inventive T20 game, and the Glenn Maxwell factor all give it the advantage.
Sydney Sixers have an excellent bowling attack but that advantage diminishes as the length of the match reduces.
Bet on the Melbourne Stars to win.
