We are back to where we started the playoffs in the Big Bash League 2020-21. The grand finale of the BBL is to be played between the same teams as the first match of the playoffs. Also, Sydney Sixers and Perth Scorchers were the two teams that finished at the top of the table and it is quite fitting that these two teams have eventually made it to the last match of the tournament.
The grand finale is to be played at Sydney Cricket Ground, Sydney, on 6th February 2021. We saw in the league stage how dominant these two teams were and given the form they've both showed in the recent matches, we expect a mouth-watering encounter. There are multiple variables at play in this match and with stakes running high, the pressure will be immense. A cracker of a match is on the cards.
Historically, there haven't been too many cases when defending champions have made it right through to the finale. It has happened this time and if the Sixers can go on to win the match, they'll become only the second team in the history of Big Bash League to defend a title. Coincidentally, the only other team to do so are Perth Scorchers, who the Sixers will be facing in this match.
Sydney Sixers are coming into this match on the back of the extremely good form. While they haven't played Cricket in a while, they romped past the Scorchers in the last match that they played. Prior to that, the Sixers had a terrific run in the group stage and topped the group with 36 points to their name.
The Sixers were strengthened by the arrival of Shaun Abbott and Moises Henriques. So strong is their on-paper team is that they did not even feel the need to press Nathan Lyon or Mitchell Starc to join the team back.
The strength of the Sixers can be seen by the fact that they have two of their batsmen in the top-five scorers of the tournament. Josh Phillipe and James Vince have both done exceedingly well and have been match-winners for the Sixers thus far. With the ball as well, the Sixers have one bowler in top-five bowlers in Ben Dwarshius. He has picked up 21 wickets and has been pretty consistent with his accuracy.
All in all, Sydney Sixers look to be an extremely well-balanced side. Their batsmen and their bowlers have both done well and the fact that they defeated Scorchers in the recent outing will add to their confidence. If the Sixers are able to play to their potential, beating them is not going to be easy.
Josh Philippe, James Vince, Daniel Hughes, Moises Henriques, Jordan Silk, DT Christian, Carlos Brathwaite, Ben Dwarshuis, Sean Abbott, Steve O'Keefe, Jackson Bird.
Even though Perth Scorchers did an awesome job in the league stage, they were forced by the Sixers to take the longer route to qualify for the playoffs. They defeated Brisbane Heat in a virtual semi-final and will be looking to use the momentum to rack another win and take the title.
While the Scorchers won their last match, they do not really have the momentum. In the last three matches, the Scorchers have lost two and won one. Besides ever since their loss in the last league match, the Scorchers seem to be a shadow of themselves. The major reason for that could be the absence of Jason Roy, who also missed the match against Brisbane Heat due to an ankle injury.
In the absence of Roy, Bancroft did a terrific job at the top, but things could be a little more difficult against the Sixers. Scorchers' middle-order, however, is as good as any and will be difficult to dislodge even for the Sixers, who have been in prime form. Mitchell Marsh, Colin Munro, Josh Inglis, and Ashton Turner can all hit the heavy ball and will hold the key to the Scorchers' fortunes in the upcoming match.
The reason why the Scorchers have made it thus far in the competition is certainly their bowling. They are the team with the highest number of wickets cumulatively with Jhye Richardson and Jason Behrendorff doing exceedingly well. Their bowlers were superb against Brisbane Heat and would want to weave the same magic against the Sixers as well. If they can do that, the Scorchers will be well within the reach of the title.
CT Bancroft, Liam Livingstone, Mitchell Marsh, Colin Munro, Josh Inglis, AJ Turner, Aaron Hardie, Jhye Richardson, AJ Tye, Jason Behrendorff, Fawad Ahmed.
We saw in the challenger match how the tables can turn in high-pressure situations. Chasing had been the order of the day for the Heat up until then, but it all changed against the Scorchers. In this upcoming match, we have different teams and different surface, but the pressure will be even higher, and runs on the board will matter. Having said that, there are high chances of rain and consequently DLS method coming into the picture. For that reason, the captain winning the toss should be looking to bowl first.

First things first - the weather forecast for Saturday is not as good as everyone would have liked it to be. There are chances of rain hampering the match and just like the challenger match, we might not be able to get the full game in. The surface, on the other hand, is exactly likely to be the way it should for the finale. We expect it to be a sporting wicket with plenty of runs on offer for the set batsmen. Considering that this is a high-pressure game, anything around par score could be considered a good score batting wicket. The team batting first will want to put a total of at least 175 runs here.

While the Scorchers have an incredibly well-balanced lineup, the Sixers have had an edge over them in recent times. In the last five head-to-head matches between the two sides, the Sixers have won four and lost one. In this season, the Sixers two times out of the three matches. On paper, bowling certainly is the strength of the Scorchers and the Sixers have scored well against the Scorchers bowlers. To add to that, the Sixers have the home advantage of playing at SCG and that advantage could be big considering how much high-pressure this match is. Betting on a Sydney Sixers win should be the way to go in this grand finale.
