About the Match
Sydney Sixers will start their BBL campaign by hosting Melbourne Renegades in their first encounter on 19th Dec at Sydney; the hosts have an extraordinary mix of young players, who have been excelling both in the domestic as well as international circuits while the visitors too have brought in some overseas players to give a good balance to the side. It will be interesting to see the two sides lock horns on Friday in the second match of the series.
Brett Lee brings loads of experience and energy to the side that’s captained by Brad Haddin, who has time and again proved to be the backbone of the batting line-up. With players like Steven Smith, Michael Lumb, Moises Henriques, Dwayne Smith and Nathan Lyon, the team can definitely put up a strong defence; however, some of the players are unlikely to play the first few matches because of commitments to the national squad. Youngsters Nic Maddinson, Ryan Carters, Doug Bollinger, Ben Dwarshuis, Steve O’Keefe and Jordan Silk bring their all-rounder skills to the table and can prove to be a tough batting line-up against any opponent. On the bowling front, they have Sean Abbott, Josh Anderson, Bollinger, Brett Lee, Trent Copeland, Mitchell Starc and Lyon, who has been exceptional in recent matches. Haddin has the expertise and a good mix of established batsmen and bowlers; he needs to strategize well and use the resources to take the team to victory in the very first game of the season.
Aaron Finch is in good form and will lead the side with conviction; he will have resources like Dwayne Bravo, Andre Russell and Jesse Ryder from overseas and a good mix of talent from the domestic circuit. With youngsters like James Pattinson, Matthew Wade, Matthew Short, Lega Siaka, Ben Ashkenazi and Nicholas Winter, Finch can bring in variety to pull out some tricks from the bag. Tom Cooper, Tom Beaton, Fawad Ahmed, Callum Ferguson, Peter Nevill, Peter Siddle , Ben Rohrer and Nathan Rimmington must come out all guns blazing and provide an all-round support to help the team do well right from the start. They have experience and match-winners on their side but they need to be cautious against the Sixers who will have the added home advantage. It will be crucial to keep a positive attitude and work towards building a foundation either in setting a target or chasing one; Finch will have to lead from the front and motivate his players to outperform themselves here.
The Sixers go in as favourites as they have a psychological advantage and the support of the home crowd; the Renegades had a roller coaster ride last year and had finished one place higher than the Sixers but it needs to be seen how they can use their player skills to dominate the hosts here on Friday. While the match will live up to the T20 reputation of a thrilling contest, we feel that Sydney Sixers will emerge victorious after a tough match.
