About the Match
Hosts Melbourne Renegades will look to revive their campaign here after suffering defeat at the hands of Sydney Thunder in the last match; the Renegades have 4 points and NRR of -0.635 and are positioned second-last on the points table whereas Sydney Sixers have 8 points with NRR of -0.372 and are placed 3rd on the table. In their previous game, the Sixers won against the Hurricanes and will look to repeat their performance here; on the other hand the Renegades who suffered a major blow to their confidence by losing to Thunder will be eager to bounce back into the competition.
The Sixers fared well in their last match against Hurricanes and won by 7 runs; batting first, Steven Smith and Silk posted a 77-run partnership for the 5th wicket to take their total to 179 runs. While the top order contributed well by hitting fours and sixes at regular intervals, Smith steadied the innings with his 52-runs off 32 balls and Silk posted 32 runs off 27 deliveries to keep the scoreboard ticking. Lyon was on fire as he provided the breakthrough with the wickets and dismissed both the openers, Hazlewood also took 2 wickets in the middle and the rest of the bowlers O’Keefe, North and Lee took a wicket each to stop the opponents from reaching the target. It was a good team effort that won them the match and their undying spirit makes them contenders for the top-four positions here; they need to be focused and with a positive attitude can definitely make it challenging for the other teams this season.
Choosing to bat first, Aaron Finch who has been performing well in the series was dismissed in the second ball of the match without scoring any runs; this shocked the rest of the players and barring Harris and Rohrer’s 50-run partnership, the top order collapsed like a pack of cards and there was no recovery for the team. The batsmen could muster up only 104 runs and the bowlers failed to defend this lowly total. Even the likes of Muralitharan and other bowlers couldn’t turn around the match and with only 1 wicket coming their way, thanks to Pattinson; the match was lost by 9 wickets in the 12th over itself. This humiliating defeat especially at the hands of Sydney Thunder, who lost all their previous games so far, would have left the players demoralized; however, they need to pull up their socks and fight hard to survive.
While the Renegades have had a dismal outing so far, this match could provide a comeback for them as they have the home advantage here; however, the Sydney Sixers who are capable of fighting hard can easily turn around the match in their favor. The match will definitely be entertaining and though it could go either way, the Sixers are looking comfortably placed to have the last laugh and win the match convincingly.
