The Women’s BBL got off to an excellent start as some big name players made their presence felt. Australia’s women have just come back victorious from the T20 World Cup and will now be looking to make an individual statement as they turn up for their respective WBBL sides.
The defending champions, Sydney Sixers, suffered a shock defeat at the hands of the Melbourne Stars in their opening match. The Sixers will now be taking on the Scorchers and attempt to get their WBBL 04 campaign off the ground.
The Perth Scorchers registered a win in their opening match by acing a tricky chase against the Hobart Hurricances.
The Sydney Sixers are the defending champions of the WBBL and also the most fancied side going into this year’s competition. That tag of favorites is in no small measure down to the presence of Alyssa Healy at the top of the order.
Healy was in excellent form at the women’s WorldT20 and ensured that Australia never had to worry about getting off to a good start. The same form shone through in ht opening match of the Sydney Sixers as well. She scored 70 off just 47 deliveries and was a part of a 108 run opening stand with Elysse Perry.
Perry ended up scoring 58 before she got out.
This great start was squandered by the Sixers that were unable to keep the momentum after these two players got out.
Big international name players like Gardner, van Niekerk, and Kapp were not able to add anything significant to the score. As a result, the Sydney Sixers could only score 165 after being 100 plus in the 11th over of their inning.
The bowling was a bit disappointing as well.
Cheatle bowled only one over for 18 runs, Aley gave away 20 in hers, and only Kapp was able to get some amount of control over the opposition batters. Perry, van Niekerk, Perry, and the other bowlers will have to do much better if the Sixers are to defend their crown this year as well.
This loss would have been a wakeup call for the Sydney Sixers. They just can't expect to turn up and win but need to be at their best in all matches.
Alyssa Healy, Ellyse Perry, Ashleigh Gardner, Erin Burns, Sara McGlashan, Dane van Niekerk, Hayley Silver-Holmes, Marizanne Kapp, Lauren Smith, Sarah Aley, Lauren Cheatle.
The Perth Scorchers played their first match against the Hobart Hurricanes in the WBBL and it was a fascinating match. There were some players that are not in the international side that stood out for both teams.
The Perth Scorchers eventually managed to get over the line in a tricky chase thanks to a smashing cameo from Chloe Piparo. She came in when the asking rate was climbing and scored a rapid 26 off 16 deliveries.
Lauren Ebsary partnered Piparo at the end of the inning and scored 40 off 27 balls herself. Ebsary’s contribution cannot be discounted either. The form of these two young batters would have given a lot of confidence to the Perth Scorchers going further into the tournament.
The Scorchers have a strong top order to thanks to the presence of Meg Lanning and Elyse Villani. Meg Lanning had a quiet Women’s World T20 and will want to score a lot of runs She looked a little scratchy in the opening match, though.
Villani scored a fifty and helped anchor the chase for the Parth Scorchers. Her position at the top of the order is going to be crucial and we think she is likely to be the top scorer for the Scorchers this season.
The bowling attack for the Perth Scorchers is a little raw. Heather Graham took three wickets in the first match and the rest were pretty tight as well. They are going to have to come up with some solid plans against a rampaging Alyssa Healy, though.
Elyse Villani, Amy Ellen Jones, Nicole Bolton, Heather Graham, Lauren Ebsary, Chloe Piparo, B Devchand, Kate Cross, Hayleigh Brennan, Taneale Peschel, Emma King.
The side winning the toss is likely to bat first

The match is going to be played at the North Sydney Oval in Sydney. A good pitch for batting should be on offer. There is always some spin on offer in Sydney although not too much of help will be available to the spinners in a T20 match.
The Perth Scorchers are a good side with an excellent op order. The Sydney Sixers also have a good top-order and a lot more experience to support it as well. We think the opening loss of the Sydney Sixers would have made it more dangerous. They will come back strongly.
Back the Sydney Sixers to win.
