With a successful Indian Premier League and the other T20 tournaments that preceded it, men's cricket seems to be back on track. Women's Big Bash League that starts on Sunday will play a vital role in getting Women's Cricket back to normalcy. Though the tournament is to be played without spectators at the ground, there is not going to be any less intensity as far as the players are concerned.
On the first day of the tournament, we'll witness the much-anticipated match between the two teams hailing from Sydney. The Derby between these two teams have always made for enticing contests, be it men's or women's cricket and it is expected to be the case this time around as well. The match between Sydney Sixers Women and Sydney Thunder Women will be played at North Sydney Oval, Sydney, on 25th October 2020.
Sydney Sixers have been undoubtedly been the most consistent team in the Women's Big Bash League over the years and much of their success is attributed to their fantastic batting unit. They have done so well that missing the finals last season was unfamiliar even for the Sixers. They have been title winners twice in five seasons and will be looking to do something similar in this season as well.
The Sixers were marred by a number of injuries last year, the injuries that took away their immaculate balance and strength. It was the first time in the history of the tournament that they failed to qualify for the playoffs. This time, however, they have their full-strength team available, at least to start with, and we are likely to see a much-improved performance from the Sixers.
The Sixers have a star-studded batting lineup, which is arguably the best among all teams in the competition. Elysse Perry and Alyssa Healy have proved their mettle all-around the globe and Sydney Sixers will be pretty happy with the way Ashleigh Gardner performed for Australia in their recent series against the Kiwis. Besides, these three, the Sixers have the services of Marizanne Kapp, Dane van Niekerk, and Erin Burns, who all have done exceedingly well in the shortest format of the game. On paper, their batsmen are capable of anything, but translating the potential to performance is what is going to matter.
With a good number of all-rounders available, the Sixers appear to be pretty buffed up on bowling as well. Elysse Perry, Ashleigh Gardner, Dane van Niekerk, and Marizanne Kapp add experience coupled with the exuberance of the youngsters the Sixers have. Going by the early looks, Stella Campbell and Hayley Silver Holmes have done pretty well with the ball and are likely to play a major role to shoulder the quick bowling department at some stage of this long tournament.
On paper, the Sixers certainly have one of the best teams in the competition, and getting off to a good start is going to be important for them. Given the number of options they have at their disposal, it would be interesting to see the playing eleven that takes the field for them on Sunday. Regardless of that, the Sixers are going to be a tough team to beat in the opening contest of the tournament.
Alyssa Healy, Ashleigh Gardner, Erin Burns, Angela Reakes, Jodie Hicks, Ellyse Perry, Dane van Niekerk, Marizanne Kapp, Hayley Silver-Holmes, Sarah Aley, Stella Campbell.
Sydney Thunder finished at the sixth spot last year but could prove to the dark horses in this season of the Women's Big Bash League. Their coach Trevor Griffin is banking on the youngsters to do that business by bringing in a fearless approach to things. This is evident by their squad composition, which features more than half of the players that are less than 20 years in age.
It's not only the youngsters, though. They have roped in the likes of Tammy Beaumont, Heather Knight, and Shabnim Ismail to add to the experience, which is going to be a critical factor in this long tournament.
The fact that the Thunder are going to showcase fearless Cricket is evident by their likely playing eleven as well. They signed two of the hardest hitters of the ball in Sammy Jo Johnson and Rachel Haynes. Haynes is coming off a terrific in the international matches that she played the the Thunder would want her to continue building on the form that she has.
Thunder's batting seems to be pretty well-settled, at least on paper. Rachel Haynes, Tammy Beaumont, Heather Knight, and Phoebe Litchfield are as good strikers of the cricket ball as any. Having said that, there is an apparent lack of experience in their batting lineup and that could turn out to be a telling factor in crunch situations. On the bowling front as well, they seem to be lacking someone who can do the job at the job.
All in all, the Thunder have a pretty good team on paper but would need their top-order to fire big time. Their over-reliance on their batting order is clearly visible and that might put additional pressure on the youngster they have. If Thunder are able to cope with that pressure, we are likely to see some brilliant moments from them in the upcoming contest.
Tammy Beaumont, Tahlia Wilson, Heather Knight, Rachael Haynes, Anika Learoyd, Sammy Jo Johnson, Rachel Trenaman, Shabnim Ismail, Hannah Darlington, Sam Bates, Lauren Smith.

Regardless of the time and situation, the Sydney derby is always anticipated. The fact that the two teams are playing after such a long time only adds to the excitement. The two teams would not only want to take the two important points but will also want to zero-in on a combination as soon as possible. This match could act as a stepping stone for both sides, but both would want to grab the two points. We expect this match to be pretty close, but comparing the two sides on paper, the Sixers are certainly better placed to win this all-important match.
