The race for the top two spots in the Big Bash League 2019-20 is heating up and there are plenty of contenders right now. There is, of course, a fair distance to go in the BBL 09 group stage so a lot of reshuffling is expected.
Standing at the top of the heap right now is Sydney Thunder, a side that many expected to fold over without a fight. Sydney Thunder has three wins from its five matches out of which one match was called off.
They will be taking on the Melbourne Stars in this upcoming match, another side that is currently occupying the top half of the table.
Sydney Thunder vs Melbourne Stars BBL 09 is going to be played at the Sydney Showground Stadium, Sydney on the 2nd of January 2020.
What is it about Sydney Thunder and close matches! After losing their match against the Sydney Sixers in the Super-Over, they won their previous game against the Adelaide Strikers by just three runs. Callum Ferguson maintained his brilliant form with the bat and scored 73 from just 46 balls.
He was helped by 63 from Usman Khawaja who did the bulk of the scoring early on and by Alex Ross who contributed a valuable 19 runs. Once again, though, no other batsman made any sort of a contribution and left the scorecard looking very lop-sided.
Callum Ferguson was lucky to survive an easy dropped catch and make the most of it. That could very well have been the turning point of the entire match and forced Sydney Thunder’s batting lineup into a difficult position.
That being side, this batting lineup has been performing for Sydney thunder and that is something we have to consider while placing our bets.
A good performance from the Sydney Thunder bowling lineup would have reinforced the confidence in the side. Chris Green, Jonathan Cook, and Arjun Nair have been very effective in BBL 09 at locking up the scoring and picking up wickets while Chris Morris seems to be their designated death bowler.
Good form and some close results going their way have helped Sydney Thunder turn into a formidable opponent.

The Melbourne Stars were at the right end of a rain-hit match where winning the toss turned out to be absolutely crucial. Their opponents in that match, the Hobart Hurricanes, were never able to get into the flow of things and could do very little as the Melbourne Stars won that match.
We don’t think it was anything but luck that helped the Melbourne Stars win that match.
Coming up against Sydney Thunder, there are some exciting battles to look forward to.
Glenn Maxwell against the spin trio of Sydney Thunder is going to be fun to watch because we know he is not going to take a backward step. Maxwell and Stoinis are the heart of the Melbourne Stars batting. They both are going to be crucial in this match because they are good players of spin.
Peter Handscomb is another player that is very effective against the spinners and showed some good touch in the previous match as well.
Nic Maddinson, Nick Larkin, and Ben Dunk were a part of the lineup in the previous match giving the Stars some decent batting depth on paper.
Dale Steyn and Sandeep Lamichhane are the overseas players the Melbourne Stars have decided to play and we can’t help but think that Haris Rauf may have been more effective than Steyn! Nathan Coulter-Nile, Adam Zampa, and Daniel Worrall form a pretty strong bowling lineup.
Marcus Stoinis, Nic Maddinson, N Larkin, Peter Handscomb, Glenn Maxwell, Ben Dunk, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Clint Hinchliffe, Adam Zampa, DW Steyn, Haris Rauf.
The team that wins the toss is going to want to bat first

The Sydney Showground Stadium is going to be used for this match and that could be an interesting change. The surface at this venue is usually slow and helpful for the spinners, something that both teams would not mind.
The dimensions of the ground are also pretty small and so a number of big-hits could be on the cards if we get a decent batting surface. A score of about 170 is going to be hard to chase down at this venue.
Sydney Thunder is playing at home and has three very good spinners at the core of its attack. It is also a side in great form with all its major players performing well. The Melbourne Stars are also in a similar position. They have a good bowling attack, have been winning matches, and their premier batsmen are in good touch.
The difference might come down to small things like the toss and the nature of the surface.
We are sticking with the Melbourne Stars in this match.
Bet on the Melbourne Stars to win.
