SYT vs MLS Match Prediction - Dec 13, 2022

The men’s Big Bash League (BBL) is set to begin a new season, and it’s the Thunder vs. the Stars to get things started. The Stars finished sixth on the ladder last season and didn’t make the finals, while the Thunder were third and reached the Knockout round but were defeated by the Strikers.

There are naturally changes to each squad, but perhaps the most glaring for the Stars is the absence of batter, Glenn Maxwell, who fractured his leg in the off-season and is ruled out for the entire year.

The other big news is that the Power Surge will remain in the new BBL season, which is a two-over period (allowed after the 11th over) that forces the team fielding to have two players placed outside of the inner circle. This is an attempt to have bigger shots at the boundaries.

SYT vs MLS Team Previews

Sydney Thunder

The Thunder look better than ever with a fantastic batting trio of David Warner, Alex Hales, and Rilee Rossouw, although Warner will play fewer games due to his commitments to the Australia squad.

This will be Hales’ fourth season with the Thunder and everyone is fully aware of his batting capabilities, as he is the all-time leader of runs scored in the BBL for an overseas player with 1,857.

Jason Sangha will captain the side after the departure of Usman Khawaja and there’s also the inclusion of Fazalhaq Farooqi from Afghanistan, although the team lost David Willey after he withdrew from the league after the draft.

Sam Billings has left for the Heat and Chris Tremain to the Hurricanes, but the addition of Western Australian star batter Sam Whiteman is indeed a celebration.

Sydney Thunder Playing 11

Alex Hales, Matthew Gilkes, RR Rossouw, Jason Sangha, Daniel Sams, Alex Ross, Oliver Davies, Chris Green, Gurinder Sandhu, Fazalhaq Farooqi, Brendan Doggett.

Melbourne Stars

Losing a big-hitter like Maxwell is no team’s idea of a good start, but there’s still reason to be positive for the Melbourne Stars. Spin bowling maestro, Adam Zampa, will captain the team and there’s also Marcus Stoinis to help score runs. Both players have had major time in Australia’s ODI and T20 international games.

There’s a lot of excitement about fast bowler, Trent Boult, from New Zealand, who is one of the best up-and-coming swing bowlers in the game. He’s likely to be the opening bowler for the Stars in each match. The return of wicketkeeper-batter Joe Clarke is huge news, as he finished with the most 50s in the league last year.

The Stars also added pace bowlers like Englishman Luke Wood and Victorian Cameron McClure, but lost Andre Russell, Sam Rainbird, Billy Stanlake, and Haris Rauf.

Pitch and Conditions

Pace bowlers always do well on this pitch in Canberra, but scores of around 170 are pretty common for T20 games.

SYT vs MLS Betting Tips

David Warner won’t be available for the first BBL game with the Thunder, but the team still looks formidable. That said, the Stars have considerable talent on their roster, particularly with the bowling, which is why they can certainly pick up the victory.

Losing Maxwell hurts for the Stars, but there’s enough batting prowess with the likes of Joe Clarke and Marcus Stoinis to score major runs. Plus, the Stars did win the last two games versus the Thunder.

Bet on Melbourne Stars to win.
