SYTW vs HBHW Match Prediction - Oct 14, 2022

The second game of the latest WBBL season is underway, with the Sydney Thunder taking on the Hobart Hurricanes in what’s bound to be a tense matchup.

The Perth Scorchers currently have a target on their backs after winning the latest Women’s Big Bash League title, but as the Thunder and Hurricanes have displayed, the rosters are catching up and this year will be quite the battle.

Each team finished outside of the top four during the last championship run, so there’s certainly room for improvement even if there’s loads of talent on the squads.

SYTW vs HBHW Team Previews

Sydney Thunder Women

The Thunder were clearly disappointed at their seventh-place finish last year, so there’s a bit of an overhaul to the squad.

For the coveted overseas roster spots, the Thunder have gone with the “go big or go home” mantra by signing not one, but three solid names like Tammy Beaumont, Chloe Tryon, and Amy Jones. Clearly, this is a season with a focus on major wins.

There’s also some bad news for the team, as star batter Heather Knight (England’s captain) will likely miss the entire season due to surgery on an injured hip. This is a huge blow, but the team still has Rachel Haynes to help score much-needed runs before she retires after this season.

Hannah Darlington will unfortunately sit out at least half of the season with a knee injury, but picking up fast bowler Belinda Vakarewa from the Hurricanes will really help the frontline bowling attack.

Vakarewa has been as dependable as they come, taking 56 wickets in 76 matches, with a 3/8 standout performance making waves.

Sydney Thunder Women Playing 11

Tammy Beaumont, Phoebe Litchfield, Anika Learoyd, Rachael Haynes, Chloe Tryon, Sammy Jo Johnson, Tahlia Wilson, Lea Tahuhu, Lauren Smith, Belinda Vakarewa, Sam Bates.

Hobart Hurricanes Women

The Hurricanes are gearing up for a big season, especially as they have got to be dissatisfied at their 6th place last year.

For one, the team made some very notable signings by picking up top-order batters Elyse Villani and Lizelle Lee. There’s been an evident lack of reliability at the top order, but these two are bound to remedy the situation straight away.

Villani, especially, is an experienced Aussie batter who knows how to kick off a match, and the Hurricanes badly needed some veteran players on the squad. Villani has made 1,369 runs in 62 matches, with an average of 28.52 and a high score of 90*.

We’re also impressed with the very useful addition of pace bowler/all-rounder, Heather Graham, as she’ll bring a lot of fight at the crease when things get tough.

Losing Tayla Vlaeminck to the Renegades and Sasha Moloney to the Stars are both bitter pills to swallow, especially since news came out that Hobart had Issy Wong on the lineup, but an injury forced her to sit out the season.

Nevertheless, the Hurricanes have a formidable squad that is sure to make life difficult for other teams when the season begins.

Hobart Hurricanes Women Playing 11

Elyse Villani, Lizelle Lee, Rachel Trenaman, Mignon du Preez, Heather Graham, Nicola Carey, Ruth Johnston, Naomi Stalenberg, Molly Strano, Hayley Jensen, Maisy Gibson.

SYTW vs HBHW Toss Prediction

Anyone winning the toss would want to bowl first due to weather uncertainties.

Pitch and Conditions

The pitch looks good, but rain forecasted in the morning could mean less bounce and more unpredictability later in the day. It should stay around 22°C, but a potentially slow outfield is no fun for the team batting first.

SYTW vs HBHW Betting Tips

This one isn’t easy, but as the odds are fairly close, then a safe bet would be to go with the Sydney Thunder.

The team just looks a bit more stable, and while there are masses of talent on the Hurricanes, we want to see how they play on the field before making any judgements.

Plus, Tammy Beaumont, Rachel Haynes, and Belinda Vakarewa are all looking fantastic and can contribute to a victory from the first ball.

Bet on Sydney Thunder to win.
